This role spans control-oriented modeling, motor and motion control design, state estimation and monitoring, and hands-on integration and calibration across simulation, bench, and integrated hardware. You will work with hardware throughout the lifecycle, from early prototypes through deployed systems, partnering closely with power electronics, firmware, systems integration, and mechanical teams. \nOpen to multiple levels of experience. \nResponsibilities \nDevelop control-oriented models of motors, drives, and rotating machinery for analysis, control design, and estimation. \nDesign and implement motor and motion control algorithms to maximize system capability, performance, and flexibility. \nDevelop estimation and monitoring algorithms to maximize system safety and reliability, including state, speed, and fault estimation. \nEvaluate novel subsystems and architectures related to motor control and drive systems to inform product decisions. \nWork with power electronics, firmware, and integration engineers to test, debug, and calibrate algorithms in simulation and on hardware. \nEnsure stability and performance of algorithms using software-in-the-loop (SIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tools, on the bench and in integrated systems. \nCollaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate motor controls with mechanical, power electronics, firmware, and process systems. \nDevelop technical documentation and specifications for internal use, vendors, and contractors. \nSupport testing, commissioning, and ongoing system improvements across R&D and facility deployments. \nBasic Qualifications \nBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related discipline. \nStrong background in first-principles linear systems analysis, state estimation, and control design. \nFundamental understanding of electric motors and drive systems, such as field-oriented control, sensorless control, and power electronics and inverters. \nDemonstrated ability to design, analyze, implement, test, and debug control systems from the ground up in real-world applications. \nProficiency with engineering development tools such as MATLAB/Simulink and Python, and with software development in C/C++ for embedded or real-time control. \nAbility to perform trade studies, reason from first principles, and make sound engineering decisions with incomplete information. \nExcellent problem-solving and communication skills for cross-functional collaboration. \nEvidence of exceptional ability (prior projects, portfolio of work, completed products, etc). \nPreferred Skills and Experience \nExpertise in advanced control and estimation techniques and optimal control. \nExperience with high-speed motors, precision motion control, or rotating machinery. \nExperience with power electronics, motor drives, and real-time embedded control implementation. \nExperience developing control systems for industrial, R&D, or other regulated or safety-critical environments. \nAdvanced degrees. \nAbility to thrive in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment, balancing technical rigor with practical constraints. \nAdditional Requirements\nAbility to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.\nEqual Opportunity Employer\nGeneral Matter is an Equal Opportunity Employer; employment with General Matter is governed on the basis of merit, competence and qualifications and will not be influenced in any manner by race, color, religion, gender, national origin/ethnicity, veteran status, disability status, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, mental or physical disability or any other legally protected status.\nCompensation and Benefits\nThe base salary range for this role is $ 120,000-$160,000 annually. \nCompensation bands are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data. Individual level and base pay is determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related skills, education, experience, technical capabilities and internal equity.
