You’ll build vendor relationships, source components, negotiate pricing and contracts, manage materials availability, and design lightweight but scalable processes. You’ll work closely with engineering, manufacturing, and finance to keep development and production on track.\nThis is a high-impact, high-visibility role ideal for someone who is both strategic and hands-on-comfortable optimizing cost structures one hour and chasing down a late component the next.\nResponsibilities\nProcurement & Sourcing (Primary Focus)\nSource and qualify suppliers for mechanical, electrical, and specialty hardware components.\nLead RFQs, negotiate pricing/terms, and drive cost-down initiatives.\nBuild and maintain a preferred vendor list and category strategies.\nManage supplier performance metrics: on-time delivery, quality, responsiveness, and risk.\nSupply Chain Operations\nOversee purchasing, inventory levels, lead times, and inbound logistics.\nMaintain accurate demand forecasts and procurement plans for hardware builds.\nImplement lightweight processes for material planning, tracking, and reporting that can scale over time.\nProactively identify and mitigate supply risks or single-source vulnerabilities.\nCross-Functional Collaboration\nPartner with engineering to define BOMs, establish part specifications, and forecast component needs.\nWork with manufacturing and operations teams to support build schedules and ensure material readiness.\nCoordinate with finance on budgeting, cash-flow implications, and cost forecasts.\nSystems & Infrastructure\nSet up foundational tools (ERP/MRP, purchasing workflows, inventory management).\nEstablish documentation standards for procurement, supplier onboarding, and quality tracking.\nDrive continuous improvement across the supply chain to increase transparency and efficiency.\nBasic Qualifications\n4-8+ years of supply chain, procurement, or sourcing experience-preferably in hardware, devices, or manufacturing environments.\nProven experience owning procurement strategies and negotiating with suppliers.\nStrong understanding of hardware development cycles (prototype → pilot → production).\nAbility to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, resource-constrained startup environment.\nAnalytical mindset with comfort working in spreadsheets, ERP/MRP systems, and BOM tools.\nExcellent communication and relationship-building skills-internally and externally.\nBias toward action; willingness to dive into the details and do the unglamorous work when needed.\nPreferred Skills and Experience\nExperience setting up or optimizing ERP/MRP systems in a startup environment.\nFamiliarity with global logistics, customs, and compliance.\nBackground working with contract manufacturers or hardware suppliers in the U.S. and overseas.\nMechanical/electrical engineering familiarity to support technical sourcing discussions.\nAdditional Requirements:\nAbility to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.\nEqual Opportunity Employer\nGeneral Matter is an Equal Opportunity Employer; employment with General Matter is governed on the basis of merit, competence and qualifications and will not be influenced in any manner by race, color, religion, gender, national origin/ethnicity, veteran status, disability status, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, mental or physical disability or any other legally protected status.\nCompensation and Benefits\nThe base salary range for this role is $110,000-$180,000 annually. \nCompensation bands are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data. Individual level and base pay is determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related skills, education, experience, technical capabilities and internal equity.
