Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard - from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features. Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale\nThe Role\nThe Safety Assurance for Effective Autonomous Driving Software (SAFE-ADS) department is part of GM’s Global Product Safety, System, and Certification (GPSSC) organization. SAFE-ADS serves as a central body for automated driving system (ADS) safety assurance, bringing together technical expertise from across the company to support the safe development, testing, launch, and continuous improvement of advanced driving capabilities.\nGM is seeking an Autonomous Vehicle Safety Case Technical Program Manager to lead the integrated execution of complex, cross-functional safety cases for ADS. This senior/staff individual contributor will bring structure, momentum, and transparency to the workstreams that support GM’s ADS safety case and safety assurance strategy.\nThe role will coordinate technical and operational work across safety case management, safety and risk management systems, operational safety and human factors, aggregate safety and rules-of-the-road metrics, counterfactual simulation, and related system-safety interfaces. The successful candidate will connect strategy to execution: translating safety objectives into actionable plans, aligning claims and sufficiency criteria with evidence and assessments, managing dependencies and risks, and driving decisions to closure across engineering, validation, operations, legal, public policy, and product teams.\nThis role is ideal for an experienced program leader who is comfortable operating in a technically complex, safety-critical environment; can synthesize diverse inputs into a coherent execution plan; and is motivated by the challenge of enabling the safe, measurable, and scalable deployment of ADS technology.\nWhat You’ll Do\nIntegrated Program Leadership\nBuild and maintain integrated program plans covering safety case workstreams, milestones, dependencies, resource needs, risks, decisions, and deliverables. \nEstablish operating rhythms, governance forums, status reporting, action tracking, decision logs, and escalation paths that enable effective cross-functional execution. \nAlign safety case claims with ADS product, engineering, validation, operational, and launch milestones. \nTranslate evolving safety strategies and program objectives into clear workstream charters, measurable outcomes, delivery plans, and ownership models. \nIdentify schedule, scope, technical, evidence, resource, and cross-functional dependency risks; drive mitigation plans and escalate issues when needed. \nCreate clear, concise communications for technical teams, senior leaders, and cross-functional decision forums. \nSafety Case and Assurance Execution\nCoordinate the development, assessment, maintenance, and continuous improvement of ADS safety cases across product-launch contexts. \nDrive alignment among safety claims, sufficiency criteria, evidence plans, assessment activities, and program milestones. \nEstablish and maintain traceability between safety strategies, claims, requirements, evidence, assessments, decisions, and changes in system scope or operating conditions. \nCoordinate technical inputs from AI/ML, autonomy, systems engineering, functional safety, SOTIF, cybersecurity, software validation, simulation, human factors, operations, and product safety teams. \nTrack evidence readiness, assessment status, substantiation gaps, deviations, and corrective actions; ensure gaps are closed, actively managed, or supported by documented rationale. \nSupport impact assessments when the ADS, operational design domain, platform, release, feature behavior, or deployment plan changes. \nImprove the processes, tools, and information flows used to manage the safety case and safety assurance lifecycle. \nContinuous Improvement\nEstablish scalable methods for planning, prioritization, reporting, evidence management, and change control across SAFE-ADS. \nUse program data and operational feedback to identify systemic issues, improve process health, and increase predictability of safety assurance delivery. \nPromote early and frequent collaboration between safety assurance teams and the engineering and operations organizations developing and deploying ADS capabilities. \nHelp mature GM’s safety assurance practices as ADS technology, operating scope, evidence methods, and industry expectations evolve. \nYour Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)\nBachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, systems engineering, robotics, safety engineering, mathematics, or a related technical field. \n7+ years of experience leading complex technical programs in autonomous vehicles, ADAS, software-intensive systems, systems engineering, product safety, safety assurance, or another safety-critical domain. \nDemonstrated experience leading cross-functional programs with multiple workstreams, stakeholders, dependencies, and enterprise-level visibility. \nStrong program management capabilities, including integrated planning, milestone management, dependency tracking, risk management, governance, issue resolution, and executive communication. \nExperience translating ambiguous technical or safety objectives into structured execution plans, measurable outcomes, and clear ownership. \nExperience developing, supporting, assessing, or managing safety cases, assurance cases, safety arguments, or equivalent evidence-based safety programs. \nWorking knowledge of safety assurance concepts and practices, including requirements traceability, evidence management, hazard or risk management, change control, and assessment processes. \nAbility to understand and connect technical work across software, AI/ML, systems engineering, validation, simulation, human factors, operations, and product safety. \nExcellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor information for technical, operational, and executive audiences. \nAbility to influence without authority, build alignment across functions, work through ambiguity, and drive action to closure. \nPassion for autonomous vehicle technology and safe deployment of advanced driving capabilities. \nWhat Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)\nAdvanced degree in engineering, computer science, robotics, systems engineering, safety management, mathematics, or a related field. \nExperience with autonomous vehicle or ADAS safety assurance, safety case management, safety management systems, or product launch readiness. \nExperience with Goal Structuring Notation (GSN) or another structured argumentation framework. \nFamiliarity with functional safety, SOTIF, AI/ML safety, operational safety, human factors, rules-of-the-road compliance, or safety performance metrics. \nExperience working in a fast-paced engineering organization with frequent software releases, evolving system scope, and complex technical dependencies. \nExperience working with independent assessors, standards bodies, regulators, industry consortia, or external technical partners. \nProgram or project management certification. \nCompensation: The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of the California Bay Area.\nThe salary range for this role is $160,200 to $290,700. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.\nBonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance\nBenefits: GM offers a variety of health and wellbeing benefit programs. Benefit options include medical, dental, vision, Health Savings Account, Flexible Spending Accounts, retirement savings plan, sickness and accident benefits, life insurance, paid vacation & holidays, tuition assistance programs, employee assistance program, GM vehicle discounts and more.\nCompany Vehicle: Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate. Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.\n\nGM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role. Do not apply for this role if you will need GM immigration sponsorship now or in the future. This includes direct company sponsorship, entry of GM as the immigration employer of record on a government form, and any work authorization requiring a written submission or other immigration support from the company (e.g., H1-B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN, J-1, etc).\n\nThis role is based remotely, but if the selected candidate lives within a specific mile radius of a GM hub, they will be expected to report to the location three times a week {or other frequency dictated by your manager}.\n\nAbout GM\nOur vision is a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion and we embrace the responsibility to lead the change that will make our world better, safer and more equitable for all.\nWhy Join Us\nWe believe we all must make a choice every day - individually and collectively - to drive meaningful change through our words, our deeds and our culture.
