At GM's Autonomous Vehicle (AV) organization, we’re combining cutting-edge research, robust engineering, and large-scale systems to make this future a reality. Our team is developing national-scale, next-generation mapping systems from the ground up-combining robust backend infrastructure with intuitive, performant user interfaces.\nThe Role\nWe’re looking for a Fullstack Engineer with deep expertise in Frontend technology to join our Mapping Engineering team. You’ll be responsible for building web-based tools and interfaces that empower engineers, operators, and stakeholders to interact with our distributed mapping systems. From visualizing map data and pipeline health to enabling map QA and debugging workflows, your work will directly impact the safety and scalability of autonomous driving. You’ll collaborate closely with product managers, backend engineers, machine-learning engineers, domain experts across Localization, Perception, and Simulation to deliver high-quality, user-centric tools that support the full map lifecycle.\nWhat You’ll Do (Responsibilities)\nArchitect and implement performant, scalable, and maintainable frontend systems for AV mapping applications across web and embedded platforms.\n\nDesign intuitive, data-rich user interfaces to visualize complex geospatial and mapping data, supporting workflows such as map editing, validation, and release.\n\nCollaborate closely with backend, simulation, localization, and perception teams to define robust data contracts and ensure seamless integration across systems.\n\nLead the frontend development lifecycle for high-impact projects-defining milestones, aligning stakeholders, and mentoring engineers across functions.\n\nDrive technical excellence in frontend engineering by conducting design reviews, enforcing UI/UX best practices, and setting standards for code quality, testing, and documentation.\n\nOptimize rendering performance and responsiveness for large-scale map data and real-time updates.\n\nServe as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in frontend architecture, component design, and visualization frameworks within the Mapping organization and across AV domains.\n\nContribute to roadmap planning and hiring strategies to grow frontend expertise across the team.\n\nMinimum Qualifications (Must-Have)\n5+ years of experience building and maintaining production-grade frontend applications.\n\nBachelors Degree in Computer Science or related field. Or relevant work experience\n\nProven experience owning and shipping user-facing products, ideally in high-performance or data-intensive domains.\n\nStrong proficiency in modern JavaScript/TypeScript, React (or similar frameworks), and state management libraries (e.g., Redux, Zustand).\n\nDeep understanding of frontend performance optimization, accessibility, and responsive design.\n\nExperience working with geospatial data, map rendering libraries (e.g., Mapbox GL, Deck.gl, OpenLayers), or data visualization frameworks (e.g., D3.js).\n\nFamiliarity with RESTful APIs, WebSockets, and GraphQL.\n\nBS, MS in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related technical field, or equivalent industry experience.\n\nDemonstrated success in leading frontend initiatives, mentoring engineers, and working with cross-functional stakeholders.\n\nPreferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have)\n7+ years of experience building and maintaining production-grade frontend applications.\n\nExperience with AV mapping systems, HD map data pipelines, or automated cartographic error detection.\n\nKnowledge of computer vision or machine learning workflows related to map labeling or perception.\n\nDeep experience with Node.js internals and performance tuning.\n\nExperience designing performant geospatial services, coordinate systems, and transforms.\n\nCompensation: The compensation information is a good faith estimate only.
