This role will develop solutions that drive innovation and competitive advantage while ensuring the reliability, security, performance, and maintainability of GM’s systems, applications, and platforms.\nThe Senior Mainframe Software Engineer will participateacross the full software development lifecycle, from project initiation and requirements analysis through design, development, testing, deployment, production support, and continuous improvement. The role will collaborate closely with developers, architects, system analysts, business stakeholders, and other cross-functional partners to deliver high-quality solutions aligned with GM standards and requirements.\nKey Responsibilities\nDevelop, maintain, troubleshoot, and modernize enterprise applications using COBOL, PL/I, JCL, DB2, IMS, and related z/OS technologies.\n\nAnalyze business and technical requirements and translate them into scalable, secure, and maintainable technical designs.\n\nPerform coding, unit testing, debugging, code reviews, deployment, and production support activities.\n\nDesign and implement data mapping, integration, batch-processing, and application-interface solutions.\n\nLeverage AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar) throughout the SDLC to accelerate delivery.\n\nWork with CICS, VSAM, MQand other mainframe technologies as required by the application environment.\n\nInvestigate incidents, perform root-cause analysis, and deliver timely, durable resolutions.\n\nConfigure, optimize, and deploy packaged software or other enterprise platforms when applicable.\n\nCollaborate with architects and project teams to ensure designs, development practices, and delivered solutions meet GM quality and security requirements.\n\nSupport application modernization, migration, cloud-integration, and continuous improvement initiatives.\n\nPromote efficient code reuse, standardized engineering practices, automated testing, and secure software design.\n\nWork effectively in Agile, Scrum, DevOps, iterative, or other software-development environments.\n\nProvidetechnical guidance and mentoring to less-experiencedteam members.\n\nParticipate in on-call and production-supportactivities as needed.\n\nRequired Qualifications\nBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field; equivalent professional experience may be considered.\n\n7+ more years of mainframe software-developmentexperience.\n\nStrong hands-on experience with COBOL, PL/I, JCL, DB2, IMS, and z/OS.\n\nProven experience with modern code management and CICD practices including GitHub, GitActions, or Azure DevOps (ADO)\n\nUnderstanding and use of GenAI or Agentic AI in analytical and development workflows.\n\nExperience with CICS, VSAM, batch processingsolutions such as IWS or CA7, and production support.\n\nExperience with relational databases, data integration, SQLand enterprise application interfaces.\n\nUnderstanding ofthe software development lifecycle and software-developmentmethodologies such as Agile, Scrum, Iterative, or Waterfall.\n\nStrong understanding of application security, software design, maintainability, and efficient code reuse.\n\nStrong analytical, communication, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.\n\nAbility to work collaboratively with technical teams, business stakeholders, and cross-functional partners.\n\nExperience with modern mainframe toolsets for discovery, profiling, and migration automation\n\nCI/CD experience in defining and managing the build, deployment, and release pipelines\n\nPreferred Qualifications\nHands-on experience using Java, REST, microservices, and containers (OpenshiftContainer Platform or Docker/Kubernetes) and integrating mainframe and midrange applicationsin a hybrid ecosystem\n\nSolid understanding of midrange platforms and frameworks such as Spring Boot and Spring Framework.\n\nIBM tools: IDz, ITOM, RACF, Connect-Direct, IWS, ADDI, ZOWE, ZoSConnect, IBM BoB\n\nHands-on experience in Test Automation\n\nExperience with packaged enterprise software such as SAP, Adobe, SFDCor similar platforms.\n\nExperience with mainframe modernization, migration, cloud integration, or platform transformation.\n\nExperience supporting supply chain, manufacturing, vehicle order management, or other large-scale enterprise systems.\n\nExperience providing technical leadership, mentoring developers, or influencing engineering standards.\n\nAbout GM\nOur vision is a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion and we embrace the responsibility to lead the change that will make our world better, safer and more equitable for all.\nWhy Join Us\nWe believe we all must make a choice every day - individually and collectively - to drive meaningful change through our words, our deeds and our culture.
