The Programming System owns the end-to-end strategy, requirements, flows, test automation, and recovery behavior that enable SDV ECUs to be safely, securely, and repeatably programmed and updated across development, manufacturing, service, and field environments.\nThe EIO/HWIO System defines and validates controller input/output capabilities-including sensing, actuation, diagnostics, I/O mapping, performance, and voltage-reference monitoring-to ensure controllers and Ethernet I/O devices operate reliably and are diagnosable. Together, these two systems represent complementary areas of Mech Infra SW: Programming manages how software is delivered and updated, while EIO/HWIO enables the controller-level interfaces through which the system interacts with physical devices. Programming also supports any previous electrical architectures such as VIP.\nThe Role:\nGeneral Motors is currently seeking a Staff System Engineer specializing in Mechatronic Flash Programming. This role will define, implement, and continuously improve flash-programming requirements, architectures, tools, and validation strategies for advanced mechatronic systems across GM vehicle programs.\nThe engineer will serve as a technical lead across development, manufacturing, over-the-air (OTA), and service programming environments. The role connects system requirements, embedded software, diagnostics, vehicle networks, programming tools, test automation, cybersecurity, and manufacturing execution to deliver reliable and efficient vehicle software updates.\n What You'll Do (Responsibilities):\nDefine and deliver flash-programming requirements and solutions for advanced mechatronic systems across GM vehicle programs.\nLead programming strategies for development, manufacturing, OTA, and service environments.\nPartner with software, hardware, diagnostics, cybersecurity, manufacturing, and vehicle-integration teams to deliver reliable solutions.\nDevelop and improve programming tools, diagnostics, scripts, and automated tests.\nAnalyze programming issues, identify root causes, and drive effective corrective actions.\nMaintain requirements, test coverage, traceability, and technical documentation.\nEstablish reusable standards and practices that improve programming quality, efficiency, and scalability.\nProvide technical leadership, mentoring, and roadmap direction for programming capabilities in future architectures\nMentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance on complex programming tasks.\nDefine and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for flash programming quality and efficiency.\nYour Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):\nBachelor's degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.\n10+ years of experience in Software Development, with a strong focus on embedded systems or automotive applications.\nStrong experience with automotive flash programming, embedded systems, vehicle diagnostics, and software requirements.\nExperience developing or reviewing software, scripts, engineering tools, or test automation.\nExperience across the software or systems development lifecycle and with agile methods.\nExperience using Wireshark or similar tools to analyze PCAP and diagnostic traffic.\nPeople Skills:\nExceptional Cross-Functional Leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across diverse teams.\nA strong commitment to Continuous Learning and staying abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies.\nDemonstrated ability in Group Problem Solving and analytical thinking to resolve complex technical issues.\nProven Strategic Leadership capabilities in defining and executing technical roadmaps.\nWhat Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):\nMaster’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.\nExperience with automotive diagnostic protocols (e.g., UDS) and vehicle communication networks (e.g., CAN, Ethernet) is highly desirable.\nExperience programming clients and interfaces.\nExperience with programming archives, binary and calibration content, utility files, interpreter specifications, archive parsers, or content-selection tools.\nExperience with manufacturing end-of-line programming, OTA programming, or dealership programming.\nExperience with C++, Python, C#, or other languages used for tool development and automation.\nDemonstrated ability to use AI tools to enhance productivity, solve complex problems, and validate outputs.\nExperience with Software defined vehicle architectures, centralized computing, vehicle gateways, aggregators, system managers, or virtual ECUs.\nCompany Vehicle: Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate.\nNote: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.\n\nGM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.
