This role sits at the center of both: keeping our data pipelines healthy today and helping build the tools that come next. You're comfortable debugging code you didn't write, you enjoy working directly with the people who use what you build, and AI agents are already central to how you work.\nWhat you will be doing at Generate Capital as a Software Engineer, Data:\nOwn the day-to-day health of our data pipelines: Python ETL jobs, dbt models in Snowflake, Azure Data Factory pipelines, and the reports and system integrations that depend on them.\n\nTriage failures to root cause and fix them, from vendor schema changes and API rate limits to failed model tests and broken dependencies.\n\nWork directly with stakeholders across the business to understand the impact of an issue, keep them informed, and confirm the resolution actually solved their problem.\n\nCollaborate with the data team on fixes, code reviews, and releases.\n\nTreat every recurring ticket as a design problem, adding the alerting, validation, retries, and schema-change handling that stop a whole class of failure from coming back.\n\nProactively find weaknesses in process, architecture, code quality, and security before they break, and drive the fix.\n\nHelp define and enforce repeatable patterns for quality and security across deployment, logging, testing, and secrets handling.\n\nHelp build, ship, and run internal applications that replace SaaS vendors, spreadsheets, and manual processes.\n\nSit with business stakeholders, translate their problems into requirements and prototypes, and turn those into working software.\n\nUse AI coding agents as your default way of working, and share your workflows and tooling so the whole team gets faster.\n\nCandidate qualifications & core characteristics:\nA demonstrated passion for, or commitment to, our mission.\n\n2-3 years of professional software or data engineering experience. Exceptional new graduates with substantial shipped work will be considered.\n\nStrong Python and SQL.\n\nExperience building or operating software in a cloud environment. Azure is preferred; AWS or GCP experience is welcome.\n\nAI coding agents are already central to how you work, and you can walk us through your workflow in detail.\n\nComfort debugging systems you didn't build, under time pressure, with incomplete information.\n\nAbility to translate business problems into technical solutions.\n\nExperience with Snowflake and dbt is a plus.\n\nExperience building internal tools or full-stack applications is a plus.\n\nExperience in financial services, energy, or another data-heavy environment is advantageous.\n\nUnimpeachable integrity and glowing references.\n\nOutstanding communication and interpersonal skills, including empathy, intuition, and listening as well as strong writing and documentation skills.\n\nHigh level of self-awareness and humility, with excitement about confronting uncomfortable situations or new challenges.\n\nIntellectual agility, curiosity, and creativity; problem-solving is your default mode.\n\nEntrepreneurial spirit: flexibility, comfort with risk, recognition that “perfect can be the enemy of the good”.\n\nThis is a hybrid role based in San Francisco, CA.\nGenerate’s compensation packages are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. Salary decisions take into account a wide variety of factors including, but not limited to: skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, geographic location, and other business and organizational needs. A reasonable estimate of the base salary range for this role is $130,000 - $160,000. In addition, the compensation package may include a discretionary bonus and other benefits, including health care benefits, retirement benefits, benefits permitting paid days off (including sick leave, parental leave, and paid time off or vacation benefits), and other benefits that must be reported for federal tax purposes.
