This role focuses on developing reliable, scalable, and secure cloud-native services using Kotlin or Java, RESTful APIs, event-driven microservices, relational databases, and cloud technologies. The Backend Engineer will work within small, interdisciplinary teams and take end-to-end ownership of services from development through production operations.\nKey Responsibilities\nBuild and continuously improve backend systems and services.\n\nDevelop RESTful APIs and event-driven microservices.\n\nDesign and operate reliable, scalable, and secure backend services.\n\nDevelop services using Kotlin or Java within a cloud-native microservice architecture.\n\nWork with event streams and relational databases.\n\nBuild high-quality, maintainable code supported by strong automated testing.\n\nUse containers and orchestration platforms to deploy and operate services.\n\nImplement and continuously improve CI/CD practices.\n\nMonitor production services, investigate issues, and respond to incidents.\n\nTake end-to-end ownership of services following a “you build it, you run it” approach.\n\nCollaborate effectively within fast-paced, cross-functional engineering and product teams.\n\nRequired Skills\nStrong proficiency in Kotlin/Java, and Python.\n\nSolid experience in backend software development.\n\nStrong understanding of distributed systems and microservice architecture.\n\nHands-on experience with event-driven architecture and event streams.\n\nStrong RESTful API design skills, including backward compatibility.\n\nExperience working with relational databases.\n\nStrong software testing practices, including unit and integration testing.\n\nExperience with CI/CD processes and modern software delivery practices.\n\nExperience with containers and orchestration platforms.\n\nHands-on experience with AWS or similar cloud environments.\n\nStrong ownership mindset for production operations and incident response.\n\nAbility to work effectively in fast-paced, cross-functional teams.\n\nStrong communication and organizational skills.\n\nDomain Experience\nExperience in digital banking, banking, financial services, or other technology-driven environments is an advantage.\n\nExposure to building scalable and reliable systems for high-availability or customer-facing platforms is valuable.\n\nNice to Have\nFamiliarity with AI-assisted software development workflows.\n\nExperience working in cloud-native engineering environments.\n\nExposure to continuous delivery and production ownership practices.\n\nExperience working with Thought Machine Vault Core or similar cloud-native core banking platforms\n\nKey Qualifications\nBachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent.\n\nProven experience in backend development and modern software engineering practices.\n\nExperience designing and operating distributed, cloud-based microservices.\n\nQuick learner with a results-driven mindset.\n\nStrong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively across engineering and product teams.\n\n(Note: Due to the high volume of applications we receive, we are unable to respond to every candidate individually.
