Description

At Gigamon, our purpose is to protect the hybrid networks and data of the largest, most complex organizations on the planet. Certified as a Great Place to Work, we offer a deep observability pipeline that efficiently delivers network-derived intelligence to cloud, security, and observability tools. This helps our customers to eliminate security blind spots, optimize network traffic, and dramatically reduce tool cost and complexity, enabling them to better secure and manage their hybrid cloud infrastructure. Gigamon has served more than 4,000 customers worldwide, including over 80 percent of Fortune 100 enterprises, 9 of the 10 largest mobile network providers, and hundreds of governments and educational organizations.

As a Backend Engineer on the Fabric Manager team, you will design and build scalable backend services and orchestration capabilities that power cloud and virtualization deployments for Gigamon’s deep observability platform. You will own the end-to-end development, testing, and delivery of REST APIs, orchestration workflows, and platform abstractions that enable reliable, production-grade experiences for our customers. In this role, you will work across cloud, virtualization, and infrastructure layers to improve performance, resiliency, and operational efficiency. You will collaborate closely with architecture, infrastructure, DevOps, QA, security, product, and support teams to deliver high-quality, customer-focused solutions and support critical production environments.

What you’ll do

  • Lead the end-to-end development, testing, and delivery of backend services and orchestration features for Fabric Manager.

  • Design and implement reliable, scalable, and maintainable REST APIs, services, and platform abstractions.

  • Develop and enhance orchestration workflows for cloud fabric deployment, upgrades, inventory, configuration synchronization, monitoring, and troubleshooting.

  • Contribute to telemetry, statistics, diagnostics, and observability capabilities that improve platform health and operational visibility.

  • Work across cloud and virtualization environments to deliver consistent and production-ready orchestration experiences.

  • Participate in architecture and design reviews, contribute to technical decisions, and influence solutions beyond the immediate feature area.

  • Collaborate with infrastructure, DevOps, QA, security, product, and support teams to deliver high-quality customer-focused solutions.

  • Troubleshoot complex issues spanning application logic, APIs, runtime, operating systems, deployment workflows, and cloud integrations.

  • Improve performance, resiliency, reliability, automation, test coverage, and operational efficiency across backend platforms.

  • Drive engineering quality through code reviews, design reviews, automated testing, documentation, and release readiness activities.

  • Mentor engineers, lead knowledge-sharing sessions, and contribute to the technical growth of the team.

  • Support customer escalations and production issues by identifying root causes, implementing durable fixes, and sharing lessons learned.

  • Evaluate technologies and engineering practices that can improve product quality, maintainability, and development velocity.

What you’ve done

  • Earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Accumulated 5+ years of software engineering experience, with significant experience in backend, cloud, or platform development.

  • Developed strong expertise in Java and backend application development, preferably using Spring Boot or an equivalent framework.

  • Designed and built distributed systems, microservices, control-plane services, or large-scale backend applications.

  • Gained strong knowledge of REST APIs, concurrency, multithreading, asynchronous processing, and backend design patterns.

  • Worked with cloud, virtualization, or infrastructure orchestration workflows.

  • Built a solid understanding of Linux fundamentals, including networking, processes, filesystems, and application runtime behavior.

  • Gained experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, caching, messaging, or event-driven systems.

  • Developed proficiency with scripting and automation using Bash, Python, or similar tools.

  • Used Git and CI/CD pipelines, and applied automated testing, code reviews, and modern software development practices.

  • Worked with or are familiar with monitoring, logging, metrics, distributed tracing, and production diagnostics.

  • Used messaging and asynchronous systems such as RabbitMQ or Kafka.

  • Applied knowledge of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, HTTP, TLS, certificates, and service-to-service communication.

  • Worked with RBAC, security best practices, vulnerability remediation, and secure platform hardening.

  • Used infrastructure automation or configuration management tools such as Terraform or Ansible.

  • Supported customer escalations, performed production debugging, and contributed to cross-functional incident resolution.

  • Led or contributed to cross-team initiatives, technical improvements, or platform modernization efforts.

  • Gained experience with one or more cloud and virtualization platforms such as AWS, Azure, VMware ESXi, OpenStack, Kubernetes, or Nutanix.

Who you are

  • You demonstrate strong ownership of features and technical initiatives from conception through production delivery.

  • You combine deep Java backend expertise with a practical understanding of cloud orchestration and platform workflows.

  • You influence architecture and technical decisions across teams while remaining hands-on in implementation.

  • You balance sound engineering practices and long-term maintainability with timely product delivery.

  • You are a self-motivated, hands-on engineer who thrives in a fast-paced, high-achieving environment.

  • You bring strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail.

  • You communicate clearly in both written and verbal form and can explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.

  • You collaborate effectively across teams, mentor engineers, and contribute to a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.

  • You maintain a strong customer focus and respond with urgency and accountability to production issues and release commitments.
