This position represents an increase in scope and technical ownership beyond the Staff Accountant track, with organization-wide responsibility for fixed asset accounting, lease compliance, and property and sales tax compliance.The Senior Accountant I independently researches and resolves accounting discrepancies, identifies unusual transactions or trends, maintains appropriate supporting documentation, and applies GAAP and organizational policies in the performance of assigned responsibilities. This position requires integrity, sound judgment, initiative, attention to detail, strong analytical and Excel skills, and a desire to support the mission of Goodwill.\nThe Senior Accountant I will promote a positive work environment that celebrates our vision, mission and core values of Teamwork, Respect, Uprightness and Empowerment in every action and interaction with team members, donors, customers, management and persons served.\nJob Description\nEssential Functions\nGeneral Ledger and Reconciliations\nSupport the financial reporting cycle through timely and accurate preparation and recording of transactions in the accounting system in accordance with GAAP. Review account activity, identify unusual or inconsistent transactions and trends, and independently research and resolve discrepancies to support accurate financial reporting and the journal entry process.\n\nMaintain supporting schedules, worksheets, and records to support journal entry transactions, and to comply with organizational policies.\n\nPrepare assigned monthly balance sheet reconciliations, including bank reconciliations; investigate and resolve reconciling items and unusual account activity; and maintain appropriate supporting documentation.\n\nProtect the assets entrusted to Goodwill through timely monitoring of daily bank activity and management of the cash reporting process.\n\nManage the escheatment process for the organization, ensuring compliance with state regulations.\n\nManage the organization's insurance policies and renewals for Property, Auto, General Liability, D&O, and Cyber insurances.\n\nManagement and training of a fixed asset accountant and an accounts payable specialist, ensuring they are properly trained on assigned duties, procedures internal controls and the systems they are working in.\n\nCompliance with internal control processes established by management, adherence to policies and procedures.\n\nFixed Assets, Leases, and Contracts\nManage the fixed asset process, including creating supporting schedules and roll forwards, maintaining fixed asset records, and reconciling fixed asset records to the general ledger.\n\nMaintain lease records and the lease accounting system (LeaseQuery), and prepare lease accounting entries, schedules, and disclosures in accordance with ASC 842.\n\nAssist with the organization, tracking, and amortization of the organization's contractual agreements.\n\nTax Compliance\nPrepare sales and use tax filings for all retail locations.\n\nManage all processes necessary for property tax compliance, including but not limited to exemption filings, review of annual property tax invoices before payment processing, and preparation and submission of required schedules for annual property tax filing and reporting. Maintain the monthly property tax accrual.\n\nAccounts Payable Support\nSupport the Accounts Payable process through vendor setup oversight and maintenance; manage the annual 1099 and 1098 filing and issuance; and review payable batches for accuracy, appropriate coding, supporting documentation, and compliance with purchasing policies.\n\nAudit, Controls, and Issue Resolution\nPrepare supporting schedules, reports, and documentation for the annual audit, and respond to assigned audit requests and follow-up questions.\n\nComply with internal control processes established by management and adhere to organizational accounting policies and procedures.\n\nIndependently research accounting issues and discrepancies, recommend appropriate resolution, and follow identified issues through completion, escalating matters to management when appropriate.\n\nReview and Team Support\nReview Accounts Payable entries and Staff Accountant I/II/III work, and provide guidance and accounting support to other team members, as assigned by management.\n\nMinimum Qualifications\nRequired Skills\nEducation\nBS degree in Accounting is preferred, other business majors will be considered.\n\nExperience\nFive years of progressively responsible accounting experience required, including general ledger accounting, account reconciliation, and financial analysis.\n\nExperience with fixed asset accounting required.\n\nStrong knowledge of Excel required.\n\nSage Intacct experience preferred.\n\nLeaseQuery experience preferred.\n\nKnowledge and Skills\nStrong knowledge of GAAP.\n\nKnowledge of legal terminology used in contracts;
