It plays a key role in innovations such as lightweight composite structures, electrification, hydrogen-powered flight technologies and the decarbonisation of aerospace.\nWe are currently hiring for several years in industry internship opportunities at our Bristol GTC.\nAs a Year in Industry student, you'll have the opportunity to work on real projects that contribute to the future of aerospace. Our interns make a genuine impact from day one and are trusted to contribute to meaningful work across the business.\nLocation: GKN Aerospace Global Technology Centre, Bristol, UK.\nContract: 12-month industrial placement.\nStart Date: August/September 2027.\nWhat You'll Be Doing\nAs an Intern in Additive Manufacturing, specifically directed energy deposition (DED), you will support the wider team in our continued development and industrial implementation of GKN Aerospace proprietary additive technology, Laser Metal Deposition by wire (LMDw). We are focused on long term use for large (>1m), critical aerostructure applications, mainly using titanium alloys.\nIn this role you will draw on your broad foundational knowledge of Engineering and Material Science, applying this knowledge on a range of research activities. It has the potential to cover a wide range of responsibilities, including aspects such as material characterization, test campaign definition, data analysis, component design, process simulation, industrial system modifications, robotics software development and/or transitioning new technology to an aerospace production state.\nThis placement is most suited to someone looking for a varied placement who is a self-starter, and who can work autonomously.\nYou will work alongside some of the UK’s leading minds in Additive Manufacturing, while having the chance to collaborate with other GKN Aerospace teams developing this technology across the globe.\nWhat You'll Bring\nWe are looking for you to bring your best self, we believe we can add the most as an individual while being our true selves.\nFor this opportunity we're looking for candidates who have the following skills, experiences, or education:\nKnowledge and Education\nMust be studying towards an undergraduate degree in any Engineering discipline or Material Science.\nAn enthusiasm for additive manufacturing linked with an interest in aerospace.\nEager to learn new technical skillsets, both software and hardware.\nAbility to work collaboratively as part of a diverse team.\nGood written and verbal communication skills in English, coupled with good IT skills.\nExperience with CAD packages (CATIA, Siemens NX, Fusion 360, SolidWorks).\nFunctional Behaviours & Capabilities\nEager to learn new technical skillsets, both software and hardware.\nAbility to work collaboratively as part of a diverse team.\nWritten and verbal communication skills in English.\nAttention to detail.\nDesirable\nExperience with coding (C++, python…) and machine learning.\nPractical hands-on manufacturing experience.\nWhat we’re looking for above most other things is a genuine interest and passion for aerospace.\nWhat We'll Offer\nWe have an opportunity available for aspiring engineers to join our LMDw team on a year-long placement for academic year 26/27.
