This internship supports the build of an Analog HV Battery Control Box benchtop training and test rig — a hands-on platform that will train new engineers and technicians on high-voltage safety fundamentals and characterize HV subsystems ahead of vehicle integration. You'll work alongside experienced electrical engineers across the build phases, gaining direct exposure to analog safety-critical design, PCB layout for high voltage, and HV commissioning practices used in a Formula 1 power unit program.\n\nKey Responsibilities\nSupport schematic capture and component selection for the discrete-analog HV safety path (precharge, contactor drive, HVIL) under the direction of the build lead.\nAssist with PCB layout reviews for HV creepage/clearance compliance (IEC 60664) and help document design margins.\nHelp draft and pilot-test procedures for the HV training curriculum modules (safety fundamentals, precharge, IMD operation, contactor sequencing).\nParticipate in bench testing and data collection during rig commissioning, under direct supervision of a certified HV-competent engineer.\nDocument test results, build progress, and design decisions to support the safety case review package.\nSupport characterization studies on HV subsystems as the rig transitions to broader ERS test capability.\nObserve and assist with HV safety procedures (LOTO, HVIL checks, insulation-resistance testing) to build foundational HV safety competency.\nAdditional tasks as needed. \n\nRequired Qualifications\nCurrently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related discipline.\nCoursework or lab project experience in analog circuit design (op-amps, comparators, discrete logic).\nBasic understanding of electrical safety principles; willingness to complete GMPPU HV safety certification prior to any hands-on HV work.\nStrong attention to detail and disciplined documentation habits.\nAbility to work on-site in Concord, NC for the duration of the internship.\n\nPreferred Qualifications\nPrior project experience with PCB design tools (Altium, KiCad, or similar).\nExposure to lab test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, bench power supplies).\nCoursework or project experience involving high-voltage or battery systems (e.g., Formula SAE Electric, EV club, robotics team).\nFamiliarity with IEC 60664 or similar electrical safety standards.\nInterest in motorsport, EV powertrains, or hybrid systems.\n\nPhysical Requirements\nAbility to stand, walk, and move in diverse operational environments, including race shops, arenas, and commercial facilities. \nComfortable working in variable environmental conditions, including loud, high-traffic, or high-pressure environments.\n\nWhy Join Us: You’ll help support a team developing a next-generation Formula 1 power unit, working alongside professionals who value precision, creativity, and a constant drive to improve.
