About DeepMind's Sustainability team: Our program’s mission is to revolutionize environmental sustainability with AI. We have an active portfolio of projects where we are applying AI towards challenging problems in grid operations, renewable energy, weather modeling, biodiversity, and agriculture. We work on both real-world applications as well as root-node research problems, aiming to achieve fundamental breakthroughs using AI to benefit science and society. You will work across disciplines and within a highly-global team that welcomes collaborators across our US, UK, India, and European locations.

We are looking for a Technical Program Manager to manage internal research team operations and external launches (of papers, code, products, etc.) for one or more applied AI projects in our Sustainability research program.

In this role, you will be ensuring research outputs are well-organized, aligned with our organizational priorities, time-managed, and ambitious in nature. You will have opportunities to both operate at highly strategic levels helping architect and manage research and launch roadmaps, partnerships, and stakeholder groups as well as technical and operational levels building dashboards to track analytics, standing up launch processes, and developing novel methods for communicating and tracking timelines across teams.

Responsibilities

• Drive workflows from start to finish by setting technical requirements, clear timelines, and progress metrics using agile, waterfall, and standard project tools to ensure dependencies and risks are tracked across projects and launches.
• Align teams across Google on shared goals and critical decisions.
• Identify potential issues and risks. Support metric definitions to measure success and code/design simple dashboards or tools to track and communicate progress.
• Cultivate external alliances with government, non-profit, and industry bodies while refining operational tools and AI workflows.
• Stay current in AI and sustainability domains (e.g., energy grids, renewables, weather, biodiversity, and agriculture) to advise on team strategy and partnerships.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in a technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 5 years of experience in program management in an AI related field, on a technical research or product team.
• Experience leading projects with cross-team stakeholders and drive alignment across organizational boundaries.
• Experience with AI systems that leverage geospatial data for applications in weather, energy, biodiversity, agriculture, or related sustainability domains.
• Experience managing launches of technologies (e.g., open source releases, enterprise products, research demos and research papers, etc.) externally end-to-end.

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience working with AI modeling research teams, including understanding large-scale model training and evaluation needs.
• Experience using various methodologies (e.g., agile, waterfall) and tools (e.g., project plans, agile boards, retrospectives) to manage complex project timelines.
• Skillful at leveraging AI tools/workflows to accelerate team or product operations.
