Google is an American technology company founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin and now the principal subsidiary of Alphabet, headquartered in Mountain View, California. It operates the world's dominant search engine and the advertising system built around it, along with YouTube, Android, Chrome, Gmail, Maps, Workspace and Google Cloud, reaching billions of users across nearly every internet-connected market. The company designs its own silicon in the Tensor Processing Unit line, develops the Gemini foundation models through Google DeepMind, and derives most of its revenue from advertising while cloud has become its fastest growing segment.

About the job

Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.

The App Surfaces team is the primary front door to the Google Home ecosystem, owning the user-facing interaction canvas across Core Mobile, Smart Displays, and Cross-Surfaces.

In this role, you will lead to drive system infrastructure and manage complex reliability issues. You will play a critical role in our ongoing technical strategy, and help to lead our team to a unified Google Home Platform architecture. Your work will accelerate our feature development velocity and be tasked to help eradicate top detractor bugs.

The Google Home team focuses on hardware, software and services offerings for the home, ranging from thermostats to smart displays. The Home team researches, designs, and develops new technologies and hardware to make users’ homes more helpful. Our mission is the helpful home: to create a home that cares for the people inside it and the world around it.Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the pivot towards treating application, mobile as "infrastructure and quality as a platform" to ensure consistency, scalability, and developer velocity across the organization.
  • Lead dedicated engineering swarms to eliminate crashers, improve state-sync latency, and resolve functional detractors.
  • Own system health by monitoring and improving crucial application performance metrics like latency, memory footprint, and crash rates, with a goal of achieving a crash-free user rate.
  • Guide the architectural migration to the Google Home Platform and lead the deprecation of legacy systems. Focus on reducing bloated and legacy application infrastructure to allow teams to build and ship features faster, rather than months.
  • Oversee the deployment pipeline, build/release flags, and on-call operations. Shift the organization towards automated, self-serve infrastructure delivery model to help vertical teams onboard and support major launches.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development.
  • 5 years of experience testing and launching software products with a focus on android systems or android architecture.
  • 5 years of experience with full stack development, across back-end such as Java, Python, Golang, or C++ codebases, and front-end experience including JavaScript or TypeScript, HTML, CSS or equivalent.
  • 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • Experience serving as a technical lead and architect, setting architectural direction, and mentoring senior engineers across multiple work streams.
  • Experience managing complex system health issues, app reliability, and large-scale technical migrations.
  • Experience implementing automated regression testing to replace manual testing efforts.
  • Strong product sense with a passion for smart home technologies, IoT (Matter, Thread, BLE), and improving user satisfaction (CSAT).
  • Proven track record of driving cross-functional initiatives and improving engineering velocity through infrastructure automation.
