Job Description Summary

The Facilities HVAC Technician II - Journeyman is a service technician responsible for performing a variety of routine semi-skilled and skilled work related to commercial HVAC maintenance and equipment operation. Schedule subject to change due to operational demand. For example, work evening or night shift during extreme cold weather.

Job Description

Technical Duties - 75%

  • Perform overall commercial HVAC maintenance support for all county buildings.
  • Troubleshoot and repair commercial HVAC refrigeration systems using manifold gauges, air systems using gauges & test equipment, and hydronic systems.
  • Document and/or log all data related to the completion of work orders in a thorough, accurate and timely manner.
  • Perform maintenance, i.e. check out, repair/replace, start-up, rooftop equipment, make-up air units, exhaust fans, energy recovery ventilators, chillers, boilers, exhaust fans, unit heaters, variable air volume terminals, zoning dampers, dampers, actuators, furnace, fan coils, belts, heat pumps, condensers and commercial appliances to include; kitchen and laundry equipment/appliances cooktops, dishwashers, steamers, kettles, ovens, washers, dryers, etc.
  • Perform final low voltage wiring, controls wiring, control’s final tie in’s, and terminations.
  • Install soft copper and ACR copper refrigeration piping using proper soldering/brazing techniques.
  • Operate building automation systems to include the following:
  • a. Use control systems as a troubleshooting tool.
  • b. Make changes to control settings using both the bac-net and graphics features.
  • c. Make simple adjustments to programming language.
  • d. Ability to adjust operating schedules.

General Duties - 25%

  • Read and interpret commercial HVAC equipment wiring diagrams and control schematics.
  • Read and interpret basic details in blueprints, specifications, and sequence of operation and instructions, product installation, engineering, and owner’s manuals.
  • Use diagnostic and service equipment including but not limited to volt meter, amp meter, vacuum gauges, digital thermometer, and air hood.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Effectively communicate current and anticipated problems to supervisor.
  • May be required to be on-call status during hours other than normal shift hours and perform related work as required; to include snow removal.
  • Safely operate a vehicle in routine conditions.
  • Perform snow removal operations using hand tools, shovels, scrapers, blowers, utility vehicles, and/or tractors.
  • Required to work in Secure and Non-Secure Detention Facilities.

Required Qualifications

Required Education

  • High School Diploma/GED and training certificate from a certified HVAC technical school, minimum

Experience Qualifications

  • 7 years Commercial/industrial service experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, memos and reports.
  • Ability to write routine reports and simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present and communicate information in one on one and small group situations to citizens and clients and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to learn and follow safety precautions common to labor positions.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and too draw and interpret graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but straight forward written and/or oral instructions.
  • Ability to respond to and solve problems involving several concrete variables in standard situations.
  • Ability to utilize reference skills to locate accurate information quickly with minimal resource.
  • Ability to function independently as well as in a team environment to complete all necessary duties
  • Candidate must pass criminal background check prior to employment start date.

Licenses and Certifications

  • EPA Section 608 Technician Certification - Universal License. Must possess a license and be certified by the Environmental Protection Agency to properly handle chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) byproducts with a CFC-Universal License.
  • Driving is essential in this position.
  • Candidate must have a valid Driver’s License and Liability Insurance (Upon Hire Required)
  • Candidate must pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) evaluation and if hired, will be subject to continuous monthly MVR monitoring and random drug screens throughout employment. (Required)
  • Pre-employment substance screening is required for this position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening. Employment is contingent upon successfully passing the screening in accordance with Weld County policy.

This position is non-exempt from the minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore eligible for overtime pay.
