He angituutanga: The opportunity

Reporting to the Team Lead Urban & Spatial Planning, you'll work closely with planners, analysts, and stakeholders across Council to deliver high-quality GIS services and insights that support Hamilton's growth and development.

You'll be responsible for managing and analysing planning-related spatial data, maintaining critical District Plan datasets, and delivering innovative geospatial solutions that inform planning and policy decisions. You'll also help develop reports, data models, and GIS workflows that support business needs and improve decision-making

What you'll be doing

  • Undertake spatial analysis and modelling to support planning and growth decisions.
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance planning spatial databases and datasets.
  • Manage District Plan spatial data and ensure information remains accurate and up to date.
  • Create maps, reports, and visualisations that communicate complex information clearly.
  • Design and implement GIS dataflows and innovative spatial solutions.
  • Support the development and maintenance of Council's online zoning platform.
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders to understand business requirements and deliver tailored GIS solutions.
  • Collaborate with Information Services, GIS Services, and Commercial & Analytics teams to achieve organisational outcomes.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, systems, and workflows through technology and innovation.

Oo puumanawa me oo wheako | Your skills and experience

We're looking for someone with a strong GIS foundation who enjoys working in a dynamic environment and turning spatial data into actionable insights.

You'll ideally have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification, such as Geography, GIS, Geospatial Science, Urban or Environmental Planning or a related discipline.
  • At least 4 years’ experience using the Esri suite, including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
  • Strong spatial analysis, data management and map production skills.
  • Experience gathering requirements, solving business problems and communicating findings to a range of audiences.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • A collaborative, innovative and customer-focused approach.

It would be an advantage if you also have experience with:

  • InDesign, Photoshop or similar
  • AutoCAD, Sketch-up or similar
  • Project-based delivery environments
  • Local government
  • Applying local government policies, regulations and legislation
