As lead designer, responsibilities will include total delivery of the civil/structural deliverables and services on time, within performance budget and meeting quality expectations. Duties may include performing advanced design work serving as a technical specialist for a complex design assignment. This level requires extensive progressive experience in civil/structural design and involves utilization of project controls for cost, schedule and quality of projects. This work will be performed under minimal supervision.\nPrimary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:\nFamiliarity with and utilization of department design and drafting standards\nRecognizing and communicating project scope, specifications and design criteria upon assignment to a project task team.\nReviewing and comprehending the latest information available regarding civil/structural calculations, equipment drawings and layouts or drawings from other disciplines before initiating design effort on specific drawings.\nDrafting civil/structural plans under minimal supervision.\nKnowledge of basic civil material specifications to the extent that all information required for material purchase, fabrication and construction is reflected on the finished drawings.\nRecognizing and communicating scope and design changes promptly.\nPerforming field related work collecting design information and verifying designs for tie-ins, function and clearances to existing facility; on-site assistance during startup; performing field support activities, where assigned, for engineering support during construction; assisting engineers with cost and material estimates and preliminary design studies.\nChecking the accuracy and quality of drawings developed by drafters, when assigned, based on information conveyed by engineering direction, equipment and discipline drawings; providing technical guidance to less experienced drafting personnel in the department.\nCoordinating & delegating work activities with other teammates and the discipline leads.\nProducing civil/structural construction scopes with engineering review and approval; able to serve in role as a mentor for entry level and new teammates.\nCompleting complex and difficult designs and layouts for complete systems and components of projects.\nAssignments typically involve design elements for which there may be no clearly established precedents and require anticipation of problems at the outset in order to provide appropriate solutions.\nPerforming front-end layout and design of complex systems and equipment.\nEnsuring compliance with required specifications, tolerances, safety factors, and client requirements.\nPerforming specialized geometric design computations and analysis.\nPerforming interdisciplinary checks and providing coordination of data to ensure compatible designs.\nAssisting in the establishment or revision of guidelines and standards.\nReviewing supplier data and supplier/manufacturer drawings, as required.\nChecking orthographic (2D) and isometric (3D) drawings prepared by others. May provide direction to a team of checking personnel, ensuring the dimensional accuracy of the drawings produced.\nCollaborating with Engineers and other engineering disciplines to ensure quality of design.\nProviding training to less experienced designers.\nServing as Lead Designer on projects, ensuring compliance with industry codes, as well as project and company standards. \nPreparing man-hour estimates as required.\nResponsible for the quality and economy of deliverables, and efficiency of detailing.\nAs a lead designer, responsible for the design team meeting scope, schedule and budget.\nIdeal Background\nEducation: Associate degree in Engineering Technology or Computer-Aided Drafting is required.\nExperience: This position requires 10+ years of relevant industrial experience in civil/structural drafting and design.\nRequired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities\nKnowledge and application of AISC and ACI standard details.\nAbility to produce drawings for concrete and structural steel, and/or civil disciplines.\nFamiliarity with specifications and installation details of construction bulk materials and equipment.\nKnowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.\nAbility to create accurate civil/structural construction documents from the information found on vendor equipment drawings.\nKnowledge and understanding of work flow/information flow between disciplines.\nKnowledge and understanding of schedule constraints and information requirements for the production of all civil/structural deliverables.\nAbility to accurately estimate completion of assigned tasks.\nAbility to develop a construction cost estimate, a detailed engineering schedule and a man-hour budget for a small project or an area for a larger project with engineering review and approval.\nWorking knowledge of CAD software, either AutoCAD, Microstation or both.\nProficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.\nGood communication skills, both verbal and written.\nAbility to develop a construction cost estimate, a detailed engineering schedule and a man-hour budget for a small project or an area for a larger project.\nAbility to determine construction material quantities and coordinate with estimating department to ensure that the developed quantities are correctly interpreted and input to the estimate deck.\nDeveloping construction scopes of work.\nForecasting hours to complete professional services.\nDeveloping staffing plans based on deliverables to be produced and the project schedule.\nIdentifying information required and proactively obtaining it.\nCoordinating with other disciplines regarding design development, changes, etc.\nKnowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.\nAbility to lead teams to deliver on commitments.\nAbility to coordinate with other disciplines to provide efficient equipment layouts and space usage.\nAbility to deliver presentations of Hargrove Engineers & Constructors services.\nAbility to lead large groups and represent the c/s department both in internal and external meetings. Very strong leadership skills, and/or exceptional technical skills, i.e., 3-D coordinator for office, CAD Community Leader, etc., ability to act as PM on small projects.\nVirtual team skills and cross divisional relationships are highly developed, and able to provide interoffice execution support with no supervision.
