Chief Clinical Information Officer (CCIO) - UK/ Birmingham

About the Role

Altera Digital Health is seeking a Chief Clinical Information Officer (CCIO) to provide senior clinical informatics leadership across our EMEA business. In this pivotal role, you will ensure that our product strategy, solution design, implementation, and optimization are deeply grounded in real clinical and operational workflows, patient safety, and measurable value.

Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, you will act as a trusted bridge between our clients and Altera. You will represent the voice of clinical and operational users while working in close partnership with our Medical Director, Solutions, Product, Development, Professional Services, Sales, and Marketing teams.

Please note: This is a non-medical informatics leadership role. Clinical decisions requiring regulated medical judgment and formal Clinical Safety Officer responsibilities remain with appropriately qualified, registered clinicians.

Key Responsibilities

• Clinical Informatics Leadership: Define and communicate the clinical informatics vision for EMEA, ensuring our digital solutions support safe, effective, and efficient care delivery.
• Client Advocacy & Leadership: Maintain trusted relationships with client executives, CCIOs, CNIOs, and frontline users. Act as an informed advocate for Altera’s software and services.
• Clinical Safety & Regulatory Partnership: Work alongside the Medical Director to ensure clinical safety obligations (including DCB0129 activities, hazard identification, and incident review) are met. Support engagement with the MHRA and other regulatory bodies.
• Product Strategy & Solution Alignment: Translate client, market, and workflow insights into clear product requirements. Partner with the Solutions team to ensure deliverables address client needs, interoperability, and operational constraints.
• Pre-Sales Leadership: Act as a senior clinical voice in pre-sales, contributing to discovery, demonstrations, ITTs, RFIs, RFPs, and customer references. Clearly articulate clinical value and differentiation.
• User Experience & Adoption: Promote intuitive, inclusive design. Support usability reviews, workflow validation, adoption planning, and benefits realization.
• Clinical Governance & Assurance: Establish appropriate forums and escalation routes to ensure clinical input is visible and traceable. Participate in reviews of significant clinical incidents or service risks.
• Market & Policy Insight: Maintain a strong awareness of NHS priorities, UK health policy, digital standards, and emerging technologies to advise leadership on strategy.
• Data, Analytics & AI: Promote the responsible use of data and AI, focusing on clinical utility, safety, transparency, information governance, and human oversight.
• External Representation: Represent Altera at client boards, user groups, advisory forums, and industry conferences.
• Capability Building: Coach internal teams on clinical workflows and client context, developing communities of practice to encourage consistent clinical engagement.

What You Bring (Qualifications & Experience)

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Health Informatics, Healthcare, Science, Technology, Business, or a related discipline (Master’s or Postgraduate qualification in Digital Health or Healthcare Leadership is highly preferred).
• 10+ years of relevant experience in healthcare, clinical informatics, health technology, digital transformation, or consulting.
• 5+ years of senior leadership, influencing, or advisory experience in complex healthcare environments.
• Demonstrable experience working closely with NHS organizations and senior clinical, operational, digital, and executive stakeholders.
• Proven track record shaping or implementing enterprise healthcare software, EPR/PAS solutions, or digitally enabled clinical transformation.
• Commercial experience supporting bids, demonstrations, procurement responses, and executive presentations.
• Clinical Qualification and Registration: Professionally qualified in a recognised clinical discipline (e.g. medicine, nursing, midwifery, or an allied health profession) with current registration and good standing with the relevant UK statutory regulatory body (e.g. GMC, NMC, HCPC).

Knowledge & Skills:

• Clinical Informatics & Workflows: Deep understanding of EPRs, clinical decision support, interoperability, usability, and benefits realization.
• Clinical Safety & Regulation: Working knowledge of NHS clinical risk management (DCB0129 and DCB0160) and UK medical device regulation (MHRA).
• Commercial & Strategic Acumen: Understanding of procurement processes (ITT/RFI/RFP) and the ability to balance client value with deliverability. Able to operate with ambiguity and connect short-term decisions to long-term strategy.
• Communication: Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex clinical and technical issues for varied audiences.
• Professional Boundaries: Clear understanding of the non-medical nature of this role, escalating matters requiring professional clinical judgment appropriately.

Working Arrangements & Travel

• Primarily remote or based in a standard office environment.
• Regular UK travel and occasional international travel required to align with client and business needs.
• Flexibility required for customer go-lives, which may occasionally involve after-hours or on-call support (PTO may be limited during critical go-live periods to meet business needs).
