Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Dental Radiology Image Annotation Specialist for a temporary, project-based engagement supporting the development, training, and validation of artificial intelligence and machine-learning models. The initial engagement will be for 6 weeks, with the possibility of extension for up to 12 weeks, based on project requirements and performance.

The specialist will review and interpret dental radiology images and create accurate segmentation-level annotations of dental anatomy, restorations, abnormalities, and pathological findings. The role requires strong clinical knowledge, dental radiographic interpretation skills, visual attention to detail, and the ability to consistently follow detailed annotation guidelines. The selected candidate will also participate in clinical calibration, peer review, annotation quality assurance, and escalation or adjudication of complex and ambiguous cases.

Key Responsibilities

Review and interpret dental radiology images, including bitewing, periapical, panoramic and, where applicable, cephalometric and CBCT images or slices.

• Perform precise pixel-level, polygon-based, or mask-based segmentation using the designated image-annotation platform.
• Identify, outline, and annotate dental anatomy, conditions, and treatment-related findings, including:
• Individual teeth and tooth surfaces
• Enamel, dentin, pulp, roots, and surrounding structures
• Dental caries and recurrent caries
• Periapical lesions
• Periodontal bone loss and dental calculus
• Impacted, missing, or supernumerary teeth
• Crowns, fillings, bridges, implants, dentures, and root canal treatments
• Fractures and other dental abnormalities defined within the project scope
• Apply project-specific annotation guidelines, clinical definitions, class labels, and labeling conventions consistently.
• Distinguish definitive findings from uncertain, ambiguous, or non-diagnostic findings.
• Flag images with inadequate quality, artifacts, positioning errors, or insufficient diagnostic information.
• Identify cases outside the defined annotation scope and escalate them through the appropriate review process.
• Conduct self-review and quality checks before submitting completed annotations.
• Review assigned annotations for completeness, boundary accuracy, label accuracy, and compliance with project guidelines.
• Participate in clinical calibration sessions to maintain consistency across annotators.
• Perform peer reviews and secondary quality checks when assigned.
• Escalate complex or ambiguous images to the senior clinical reviewer or adjudicator.
• Support resolution of annotation discrepancies based on approved clinical and annotation guidelines.
• Document questions, exceptions, edge cases, and clinical rationales clearly.

Provide clinical input for annotation manuals, reference libraries, edge-case definitions, and decision trees.

• Contribute to refinement of annotation guidelines based on recurring issues and project findings.
• Participate in project meetings, training sessions, quality reviews, and feedback discussions.
• Incorporate feedback from quality reviewers and clinical adjudicators into future annotations.
• Meet established productivity, accuracy, quality, and turnaround-time expectations.
• Maintain accurate records of completed annotations, pending reviews, quality findings, and escalations.
• Use project platforms and collaboration tools to track assignments and communicate progress.
• Promptly communicate potential delays, technical issues, or clinical uncertainties to the project lead.
• Follow all project workflows, standard operating procedures, and quality-control requirements.
• Protect patient and client information in accordance with HIPAA and applicable privacy, security, and data-handling requirements.
• Access and review clinical images only through approved systems and devices.
• Complete all required project training, privacy, security, and compliance requirements before accessing project data.

Other Requirements

DDS, DMD, BDS, or an equivalent recognized dental degree.

• Located in the United States and legally authorized to work in the U.S.
• Minimum of five years of clinical dentistry experience.
• Strong knowledge of dental and craniofacial anatomy, oral and maxillofacial radiology, oral pathology, restorative dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, and prosthodontics.
• Demonstrated experience interpreting bitewing, periapical, and panoramic dental radiographs.
• Ability to identify normal anatomy, restorations, diseases, abnormalities, and treatment-related findings in dental images.
• Strong visual attention to detail and ability to recognize subtle radiographic findings.
• Ability to perform or quickly learn precise pixel-level, polygon-based, and mask-based image segmentation.
• Ability to understand and consistently follow detailed annotation guidelines.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, clinical decision-making, and written communication skills.
• Proficiency with computer-based applications and ability to learn image-annotation platforms.
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment while meeting quality, productivity, and turnaround-time expectations.
• Availability for the initial 6-week engagement and any agreed extension, up to a total of 12 weeks.
• Ability to handle protected health information and sensitive clinical data appropriately.

Preferred Qualifications

• Active, unrestricted dental license in one or more U.S. states.
• Previous experience with dental or medical image annotation.
• Experience performing pixel-level, polygon-based, mask-based, or three-dimensional segmentation.
• Experience supporting AI or machine-learning training and validation datasets.
• Formal education, residency, fellowship, or advanced training in oral and maxillofacial radiology.
• Experience interpreting CBCT scans or other three-dimensional dental imaging.
• Familiarity with annotation platforms such as CVAT, Labelbox, V7, Supervisely, Encord, or comparable tools.
• Experience conducting clinical audits, chart reviews, peer reviews, or image-quality reviews.
• Experience serving as a dental clinical reviewer, consultant, quality reviewer, or subject-matter expert.
• Understanding of inter-annotator agreement, annotation calibration, ground-truth development, and quality-control processes.
• Experience developing clinical annotation guidelines, reference materials, or evaluation criteria.
• Previous experience working in a HIPAA-compliant remote delivery environment.
