This isn’t just a job, it’s a chance to lead innovation, engineer impact, and build a legacy of excellence.\nInThe Northern California Control Systems and Cybersecurity team supports a diverse portfolio of projects across industrial automation, operational technology (OT), SCADA, instrumentation and controls (I&C), industrial networking, building automation systems (BAS/BMS), and OT cybersecurity. This position is intended to provide a structured development path in controls engineering, SCADA, automation, industrial networking, and operational technology through direct involvement in real-world project delivery and engineering activities for clients including hyperscale data centers, municipal water and wastewater utilities, renewable energy and battery energy storage facilities, agribusiness and food processing clients, industrial manufacturing facilities, and other critical infrastructure projects throughout Northern California and the western United States.\nUnder the guidance of experienced engineers and technical specialists, responsibilities may include:\nAssisting with the design and development of SCADA, automation, instrumentation, networking, and control system solutions.\n\nSupporting preparation of engineering reports, assessments, studies, master plans, technical memoranda, and construction documents.\n\nAssisting with development of P&IDs, control narratives, instrumentation schedules, network architecture diagrams, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, loop drawings, and technical specifications.\n\nSupporting implementation activities including PLC programming, HMI development, configuration, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning.\n\nParticipating in field investigations, site assessments, factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), startup support, and operational readiness activities.\n\nAssisting multidisciplinary teams with integration of instrumentation, controls, networking, cybersecurity, power, process, and mechanical systems.\n\nSupporting development of innovative technology solutions including industrial networking, applied automation, advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, and operational technology modernization initiatives.\n\nParticipating in project coordination, technical workshops, proposal development, and client-facing activities while developing technical and professional skills.\n\nPerform other duties as needed.\n\nThis position provides an opportunity to develop technical expertise across controls engineering, systems integration, industrial networking, operational technology, cybersecurity, commissioning, and automation while working on complex projects for a broad range of industries and clients.\nPreferred Qualifications\nGeneral\nMaster's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Automation Engineering, or related field.\n\nEngineer in Training (EIT) certification. Candidates without valid EIT certification will be titled Control System Specialist and not EIT\n\nSelf-motivated and able to work independently and collaboratively with project teams.\n\nStrong written and verbal communication skills.\n\nInternship, co-op, research, laboratory, or project experience involving industrial automation, controls, electrical systems, instrumentation, networking, or software development.\n\nDemonstrated interest in controls engineering, industrial automation, operational technology, or cybersecurity through academic projects, extracurricular activities, or professional organizations such as ISA, IEEE, or similar organizations.\n\nAbility and willingness to travel as required.\n\nThis position is subject to a preemployment drug test.\n\nControls, Automation & Systems Integration\nCandidates may possess experience in one or more of the following:\nSCADA, PLC, HMI, DCS, or industrial automation systems.\n\nKnowledge of Allen-Bradley, Modicon, Wonderware/AVEVA, Ignition, or similar control system technologies.\n\nInstrumentation, control panels, process controls, and industrial networking.\n\nControl system programming, testing, troubleshooting, commissioning, or startup activities.\n\nWater/wastewater, industrial manufacturing, renewable energy, agribusiness, or process automation applications.\n\nOperational Technology, Networking & Cybersecurity\nCandidates may possess experience in one or more of the following:\nIndustrial Ethernet networks and communication protocols.\n\nBuilding automation systems (BAS/BMS).\n\nOT networking, network architecture, or cybersecurity concepts.\n\nData centers, critical infrastructure, operational technology, or industrial control system environments.\n\nTechnologies and protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, EtherNet/IP, OPC, Wireshark, firewalls, switches, or similar technologies.\n\nBenefits: Employee Stock Ownership, Robust Health Plan (medical/dental/vision), 401K Match, Paid Time Off, Paid Holidays, Parental Leave, Life Insurance, Disability Insurance, etc...\nRequired Qualifications\nBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related field. \nProficiency with Microsoft Office products. \nAn attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must\nWhat We Believe\nHDR is our company.
