WordPress development and maintenance will be at the center of this role, but we’re looking for someone who is equally energized by troubleshooting an integration, helping implement tagging, debugging an email or figuring out something they haven’t encountered before.\nThe ideal candidate is a self-starter who is curious, resourceful and motivated to find answers independently. They see unfamiliar challenges as opportunities to learn rather than barriers and are comfortable moving between different types of digital work as client and team needs evolve.\nThis role will initially be divided between new WordPress development and maintenance for existing clients, with the potential to create new capabilities and offerings for our clients and eventually lead the WordPress development practice at Hiebing.\nResponsibilities\nDevelop, enhance and maintain WordPress websites, including block editor/Gutenberg development, theme customization, plugin configuration and integrations.\nTroubleshoot and resolve website issues, including plugin conflicts, third-party integrations, browser and device inconsistencies, and performance problems.\nSupport ongoing website maintenance, landing pages, forms, content migrations and other digital enhancements across multiple client properties.\nAssist with analytics and tagging implementations using tools such as Google Tag Manager and GA4, including implementation, troubleshooting and QA.\nSupport email development and production needs, including building and modifying HTML emails, troubleshooting rendering or template issues, and conducting technical QA.\nImplement and troubleshoot marketing technology integrations, including forms, analytics, consent management, email platforms and other third-party tools.\nWork within Git-based development workflows and follow established practices for commits, branching, pull requests, releases and documentation.\nCollaborate with developers, digital strategists, project managers, designers and other team members to solve problems and deliver high-quality work.\nMaintain security, accessibility, performance and quality standards across development work.\nRequired Skills and Experience\n2-3 years of professional web development experience, with meaningful hands-on WordPress theme development experience.\nComfort using GitHub Copilot for AI-assisted development and as part of the problem-solving process.\nStrong HTML, CSS and JavaScript fundamentals.\nWorking knowledge of PHP and WordPress development.\nExperience with WordPress themes, plugins, Gutenberg/block editor and common marketing-site integrations.\nStrong troubleshooting and debugging skills.\nExperience working with Git-based version control.\nAbility and willingness to work across different types of technical assignments rather than specializing exclusively in one area.\nResourceful and comfortable researching unfamiliar problems and identifying solutions independently.\nSelf-motivated, with the ability to take ownership of work and follow it through to completion.\nCurious and eager to learn new technologies, platforms and approaches.\nFamiliarity with analytics, tagging and marketing integrations, including GA4/GTM, consent tools, A/B testing, email providers and CDPs.\nAccessibility awareness, including WCAG fundamentals, and experience implementing accessible UI patterns.\nAble to manage multiple priorities and shift between projects in a fast-paced environment.\nCollaborative, dependable and committed to producing high-quality work.\nNice-to-Have Skills and Qualifications\nWooCommerce or Shopify experience, including checkout optimization, payment and shipping plugins, and catalog organization.\nComfort with WP-CLI, Composer, deployment automation and modern WordPress build pipelines.\nExperience implementing WordPress hardening practices, including secure configuration, plugin governance and least-privilege access.\nFamiliarity with unit testing or automated regression testing.\nHands-on experience with Email on Acid or Litmus to create visual and brand consistency across email devices and clients.\nYou’ll Thrive Here If…\nYou enjoy building new digital experiences-and making existing ones work better.\nYou see an unfamiliar technical problem as something to investigate, not something to avoid.\nYou’re willing to dig into documentation, test possible solutions and ask thoughtful questions when needed.\nYou can move comfortably between development, maintenance, troubleshooting, analytics, tagging and email work.\nYou take ownership of your work and care about seeing it through from initial request to final QA.\nYou balance speed with thoughtful attention to security, accessibility, performance and quality.\nYou’re curious about AI and emerging technology while still bringing your own judgment and problem-solving skills to the work.\nYou believe the strongest solutions come from developers, strategists, designers and project managers working together.\nWhere You’ll Work\nThis position is based in Hiebing’s Madison, Wisconsin office.\nCollaboration is an important part of how we work at Hiebing.
