Don’t miss the opportunity to drive your career forward with us-apply now and make a difference!\nEssential Tasks & Responsibilities:\nAs a Transit Operator I for the City of High Point, your responsibilities will include:\nOperating the bus on assigned routes and schedules, ensuring safe and timely transportation for passengers.\nPerforming pre-departure inspections of the bus and related equipment, reporting any defects to ensure smooth and safe operations.\nMaintaining trip records including fare collections, mileage, and vehicle conditions, keeping accurate logs for each route.\nAssisting passengers in boarding and alighting, including those using wheelchairs or other mobility devices, and ensuring their safety by securing wheelchairs with tie-down straps.\nCollecting fares and issuing tickets, including handling transfer slips to ensure passengers’ journeys are smooth and seamless.\nAnnouncing bus stops clearly, so passengers are aware of their next destination.\nProviding basic schedule information to passengers, answering questions about routes and arrival times.\nCommunicating via two-way radio to report traffic delays, accidents, downed traffic signs, and faulty signals to office staff and other personnel.\nPerforming post-shift inspections of the bus and reporting any defects, ensuring the vehicle is ready for the next operator.\nCompleting incident and accident reports or documenting any unusual circumstances to ensure accurate records.\nAdhering to safety regulations at all times and following prescribed accident procedures when necessary.\nPerforming additional duties as assigned to support smooth transit operations.\nEnsuring all work complies with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies, maintaining a safe environment for all passengers and staff.\nQualifications:\nMinimum Required Qualifications:\nMust be at least 21 years old\nValid Class B North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger (P) Endorsement\nSix (6) months of verifiable experience operating a similar or larger commercial vehicle\nAbility to drive a transit bus in typical urban traffic, and work well under time constraints and stress\nFlexibility to work various schedules, including fill-ins, split shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays (vacation and holiday leave subject to coverage needs)\nProficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in English\nPreferred Qualifications:\nTwelve (12) months of verifiable experience operating a similar or larger commercial vehicle\nBilingual skills (French or Spanish)\nPhysical Requirements:\n Hearing/Speaking: Required to communicate effectively with internal and external customers (co-workers, citizens, and applicants).\n Visual Abilities:Far Acuity: Must have clear vision at 20 feet or more to safely drive and navigate traffic (corrected to 20/25).\nNear Acuity: Must have clear vision at 20 inches or less to operate controls and read instruments (corrected to 20/30).\nDepth Perception: Ability to judge distances for tasks like seating passengers and vehicle operations.\nField of Vision: Must have a broad field of vision for surrounding traffic, signs, and instruments.\nAccommodation: Ability to quickly shift focus between inside bus conditions and external traffic.\n\nPhysical Strength:Light to Medium Work, with the ability to exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, and negligible force constantly for handling materials.\n\nPhysical Demands:Reaching: Extending hands or arms.\nHandling: Seizing, holding, grasping, or working with hands.\nFingering: Picking, pinching, or working with fingers.\n\nMental Activity/Requirements:\nReasoning: Ability to apply logical thinking, public personnel laws, and exercise good judgment in various situations.\nMathematics Ability: Essential for making change, counting money, and preparing reports.\nLanguage Ability:Read: Ability to interpret manuals, street names, schedules, and instructions.\nWrite: Ability to complete required reports.\nSpeak: Clear and effective communication with colleagues, the public, and via PA system/radio.\n\nEnvironmental Conditions:\n Physical Surroundings: Work both inside and outside in various weather conditions (rain, sleet, snow, etc.), especially when assisting passengers or at terminals.\nHazards: Exposure to traffic jams, accidents, and OSHA standards for bloodborne pathogens.\nMachinery/Tools/Work Aids/Other Equipment: Operate and interact with city transit buses, fareboxes, two-way radios, wheelchair securement straps, and other related equipment.\nThe work location of this job will be 716 W Martin Luther King Jr Dr High Point, North Carolina.Our Commitments\nThe City of High Point is dedicated to fostering a work environment that values individuals from all backgrounds and seeksto attract and retainthe most qualified partners in service to the citizens of High Point.
