This role provides inventory oversight, policy development, and operational guidance to ensure activities align with state and federal pharmacy laws, DEA requirements, environmental regulations, and internal quality standards.\nThis position partners closely with Pharmacy Operations, Quality, Compliance, Fulfillment, and Customer Service teams to mitigate risk, maintain inspection readiness, and protect patient safety.\nKey Responsibilities\nDisposal & Waste Oversight\nOversee and approve processes for disposal of prescription medications, compounded preparations, and pharmaceutical waste in compliance with 503A, DEA, and applicable state regulations.\n\nEnsure proper segregation, documentation, and destruction of controlled and non-controlled substances.\n\nReview and approve waste vendors, destruction methods, and Certificates of Destruction.\n\nMonitor disposal workflows to ensure adherence to applicable USP, EPA, and state environmental standards.\n\nMaintain full control and traceability of inventory from receipt through disposal, including patient returns, quarantined items, and waste.\n\nCustomer Returns Management\nProvide pharmacist oversight for return-to-sender shipments, documentation, and disposition.\n\nEnsure returned medications are handled according to regulatory requirements, including non-redispensing rules.\n\nEstablish and maintain SOPs governing returns, quarantine, and destruction.\n\nSupport Quality investigations related to returned products, including potential product quality complaints and/or adverse events.\n\nCompliance & Quality\nDevelop, review, and maintain policies, SOPs, and training materials related to disposals, returns, and waste handling.\n\nConduct routine audits and risk assessments of disposal and returns processes.\n\nSupport regulatory inspections and audits (e.g., Board of Pharmacy, DEA) related to waste and returns.\n\nTrack, trend, and report metrics related to waste, returns, deviations, and compliance findings.\n\nPartner with Quality to ensure sterile compounding materials have approved specification sheets and/or Certificates of Analysis (COAs).\n\nCross-Functional Collaboration\nPartner with Pharmacy Operations, Fulfillment, Customer Service, Quality, and Compliance to ensure aligned execution.\n\nServe as a subject matter expert on disposal, returns, and waste-related regulatory requirements.\n\nAssist with controlled substance inventories during PIC changes and annual inventories, as required by Boards of Pharmacy.\n\nPartner with the Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) to ensure restricted inventory areas remain under pharmacist oversight (e.g., quarantine areas, disposal cages, controlled substance storage).\n\nSupport continuous improvement initiatives to reduce waste and improve efficiency while maintaining compliance.\n\nInventory Management\nEnsure invoices are signed and dated by pharmacists and appropriately filed, with clear segregation of controlled vs. non-controlled substance records.\n\nOversee and control R&D inventory activities (e.g., API use, tablet creation, labeling, disposal) ensuring records are accurate, complete, and compliant.\n\nMonitor cycle count results to identify trends that may indicate shrinkage, discrepancies, or diversion risk.\n\nQualifications\nDoctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D) or Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from an accredited institution.\n\nActive, unrestricted Pharmacist License in State of employment (AZ)\n\n5-7+ years of pharmaceutical inventory management experience\n\nStrong working knowledge of 503A regulations, DEA requirements, and state Board of Pharmacy rules\n\nExperience with pharmaceutical waste handling, medication disposal, and/or returns oversight\n\nAbility to interpret complex regulatory requirements and translate them into operational workflows\n\nExcellent documentation, communication, and inspection readiness skills\n\nDemonstrated ability to build and implement Board of Pharmacy-compliant programs\n\nPreferred\nDoctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D)\n\nActive, unrestricted Pharmacist License in State of employment (AZ)\n\n7-10+ years of pharmaceutical inventory management experience\n\nExperience in mail-order, compounding, or high-volume pharmacy operations\n\nFamiliarity with controlled substance destruction processes and vendor management\n\nPrior experience supporting regulatory inspections and compliance audits\n\nBackground in quality assurance, compliance, or regulatory affairs\n\nExperience leading (PPE) be worn for the length of working with these drugs. These items would include gloves, respiratory protection, gown and other items as required.\n\nThis position requires medical approval to wear respiratory protection in the form of negative or positive pressure respirators, including N95, full face respirator, SCBA, or Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR).\n\nPhysical exertion required. Including, but not limited to, walking up to 50% of the time, standing up to 100% of the time, squatting and bending up to 20% of the time and lifting up to 80% of the time for up to a twelve hour shift.
