Air Tutors is an online tutoring company that works with K-12 students and adult learners.\nWorking Condition : 20 hours a week of commitment. the engineer will be based in Cairo, and accommodate a reasonable local working schedule while ensuring approximately 3-4 hours of daily overlap with our engineering team in Utah\nJob Description\nWe are seeking a Senior Full Stack Engineer with strong experience in full-stack development to help build the next generation of Air Tutors. Our web application is currently a hybrid of React components and server-rendered Ruby templates. Although the backend is written in Ruby on Rails, we are open to talented engineers who may not have extensive Ruby experience if they are motivated and driven to learn the language.\nWe want an engineer who is motivated to grow, continually refine their skills, take increasing ownership of their work, and help solve problems rather than simply wait for solutions or detailed specifications. We are looking for an individual who wants to grow with us!\nIn this role, you will work closely with our CTO to brainstorm, develop, test, and deploy new features across our platform. You will have meaningful ownership over both the technical implementation and the process of determining how features should work.\nCreativity, curiosity, and independent problem-solving are critical. Feature requests may begin as high-level objectives rather than fully defined specifications. The engineer in this role should be comfortable translating those objectives into clear requirements, identifying unanswered questions, proposing implementation approaches, and moving work forward with increasing independence.\nEssential Duties and Responsibilities\nFull Stack Development\nDesign, develop, test, and maintain features across our React, Ruby on Rails, and PostgreSQL application.\nImplement new frontend and backend functionality from end to end.\nMaintain and improve existing application functionality, performance, and reliability.\nDiagnose and resolve bugs and production issues.\nWrite maintainable, scalable, and well-tested code.\nApply technical knowledge and relevant expertise to projects throughout the development lifecycle.\nProduct & Feature Development\nOwn end-to-end implementation of features.\nTranslate high-level product and business objectives into concrete technical requirements and implementation plans.\nParticipate in requirements gathering and help define functionality before development begins.\nIdentify open questions, technical risks, dependencies, edge cases, and tradeoffs before and during development.\nWhen encountering a blocker, investigate the issue, identify potential solutions, and recommend a path forward whenever possible.\nTake increasing ownership of projects from problem definition → requirements → proposed solution → implementation → testing → delivery.\nThink beyond the immediate feature request to understand the underlying business problem and determine whether there may be a better technical solution.\nCross-Functional Collaboration\nWork closely with our CTO to brainstorm, scope, develop, and refine new features.\nCollaborate with team members to ensure features meet both technical and business requirements.\nCommunicate proactively about progress, timelines, blockers, changes in availability, and potential delays.\nWork effectively across time zones and within a small, fast-moving team where consistent communication is essential.\nIncorporate feedback and continuously improve both technical implementation and development processes.\nQualifications\nRequired\n4+ years development experience\n2+ years React experience\n2+ years relational database experience, preferably PostgreSQL\n2+ years backend development experience (Ruby, Node.js, or similar)\nAbility to work both autonomously and as part of a team\nWillingness and interest in learning new technologies\nExcellent verbal and written communication skills\nAbility to adapt in a changing environment\nPositive, team-oriented attitude\nStrong problem-solving skills\nPreferred\nRuby on Rails experience\nPostgreSQL experience\nExperience building and maintaining production web applications\nExperience working across both frontend and backend systems\nEducation or edtech experience\nNice to Have\nExperience working on products used by schools, educators, or students\nExperience integrating AI or LLM-powered functionality into web applications\nExperience working in a small or fast-growing engineering team\nFamiliarity with education data privacy, including FERPA\nLove for education and supporting students\nHow You Work\nBecause we are a small, fast-moving team, how you approach your work is as important as your technical ability.
