We are a group of engineers (Software, Data, Quality, Platform), data scientists and agile practitioners. We organise ourselves into chapters according to these professional disciplines. You would be joining our Software Engineering Chapter.\nFrom these chapters we build cross-functional squads aimed at delivering business value in particular areas. These are tight-knit Scrum teams working closely with product owners and business stakeholders to determine what insights are required and working to deliver them. Our engineers are enthusiastic in applying technology to drive results and advocate for appropriate solutions.\nThe role\nWe are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic professional who will be a key and influential member of our Hiscox London Market Engineering Team, within the Software Engineering Chapter. In this role you will be working in one of our various squads as we create new “Cloud First” solutions to add value to the business, while supporting and transforming our existing on-prem and cloud systems. We are looking for someone who is aligned with modern software engineering practices and ready to embrace the use of AI enabled development tool and adapt to the ever changing space as we enter the agentic SDLC phase to allow rapid delivery of high quality value.\nKey Responsibilities:\nWork collaboratively with your squad and stakeholders, taking a technical leading role in shaping and delivering business outcomes.\nWrite and review clean, maintainable code, guiding others on best practices such as SOLID principles, design patterns, unit testing, peer reviews, and CI/CD processes.\nEnsure documentation is accurate and up to date, and mentor team members on maintaining high-quality story documentation and technical clarity.\nActively support and mentor team members by sharing knowledge, providing guidance, and fostering a culture of continuous learning.\nGuide and contribute to solution design, working closely with stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable and maintainable implementations.\nCollaborate with engineers across teams to influence and evolve our architecture, promoting best practices and alignment.\nChampion security and engineering standards, ensuring your work and that of the team adheres to organisational guidelines.\nAdopt new ways of working, including AI-assisted development tools, and help the team navigate the evolving engineering landscape, including the move towards an agentic SDLC.\nFoster effective collaboration with distributed teams across the United Kingdom, Portugal, Poland, and India, promoting alignment and consistency in delivery.\nSkills:\nCandidates should hold an academic degree in a related field (or 5+ years employment in a Software Engineering role), demonstrating increasing responsibility in delivery and technical decision-making.\nThey should have strong, hands-on experience in C# and .NET, with the ability to design, develop, and review high-quality code, and in writing effective unit tests.\nThey should have a strong background in SQL, with proven experience in designing, optimising, and maintaining databases in production environments.\nThey should have solid experience with CI/CD pipelines and a strong understanding of source control systems and branching strategies, with the ability to influence and improve team practices.\nExperience with Azure technologies such as Azure Functions, Azure SQL, Azure Storage, Azure API Management (APIM) and Azure Service Bus, especially in designing and implementing event-driven or messaging-based architectures.\nFamiliarity with modern front-end technologies such as Blazor, Angular, or React is beneficial, with the ability to contribute to or guide the development of responsive user interfaces.\nBehaviours:\nDemonstrates strong technical competence and takes ownership of delivering high-quality software solutions.\nCommunicates clearly and collaborates effectively with team members, stakeholders, and cross-functional partners.\nOpen to feedback, actively learns new technologies and shares knowledge with colleagues to support team success.\nSeeks to understand business objectives and contributes solutions that deliver tangible customer and business value.\nMakes informed, risk-aware decisions within their area of responsibility and escalates issues appropriately when needed.\nConsistently follows engineering standards, best practices, and secure software development principles.\nApproaches problems with curiosity, analytical thinking, and a pragmatic mindset, balancing quality, time, and business needs.\nAdapts positively to changing priorities, new technologies, and evolving business requirements.\nContributes to a culture of continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance processes, tools, and ways of working.\nBuilds positive working relationships through professionalism, empathy, and respect for diverse perspectives.\nTakes accountability for personal development and actively seeks opportunities to expand technical and domain knowledge.\nSupports team success by being dependable, collaborative, and willing to help others when needed.\nDiversity and flexible working at Hiscox:\nAt Hiscox we care about our people.
