Hitachi is a Japanese conglomerate founded in 1910 by Namihei Odaira as an electrical repair shop inside a copper mine, which grew into one of the country's largest industrial groups. After a decade of restructuring it now concentrates on digital systems and services, green energy and mobility, selling grid equipment through Hitachi Energy, trains and signalling through Hitachi Rail, and storage and data platforms through Hitachi Vantara. Its Lumada portfolio ties operational technology to software, and the 2021 acquisition of GlobalLogic gave the group a large digital engineering arm serving customers outside Japan.

From the multi-cultural strength of our global organisation to the sustainable and innovative ways we work to bring people together, there’s something for everyone to get stuck into. And that’s where you come in.

Job Description:

Your new role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior RAMS Engineer to join our engineering organisation, providing specialist Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Technical Safety (RAMS) expertise across projects, products and bids.

Working within our Mainline signalling environment, you’ll play an important role in delivering the safety and assurance activities that support complex, safety-critical railway systems throughout the project lifecycle. From defining safety requirements and undertaking RAMS analysis through to Safety Case development, approval and acceptance, this is an opportunity to apply your expertise across the full engineering lifecycle.

You’ll work closely with engineering teams, customers and independent bodies, helping ensure our RAMS and assurance activities are delivered consistently and to the required quality.

Some key responsibilities

  • Provide specialist Technical Safety, RAM and System Assurance support across engineering projects.
  • Deliver RAMS engineering activities throughout the project lifecycle, from initial specification and Safety Case development through to safety approval and acceptance.
  • Lead and support quantitative and qualitative system safety and RAM analyses.
  • Manage hazards from initial identification through to closeout, including safety requirements specification and SIL determination.
  • Work directly with customers to capture and define system and safety requirements and agree verification, validation and safety demonstration requirements.
  • Coordinate and support RAMS input into bids, including safety management, engineering, assurance and approval activities.
  • Lead RAMS activities during Project and Product Design Reviews, ensuring Technical Safety and Assurance requirements have been appropriately implemented.
  • Develop remits and manage contracts with independent bodies.
  • Prepare and supervise on-site testing and commissioning of railway assets, equipment and systems.
  • Initiate and participate in safety reviews and audits.
  • Support incident reporting and response, including root-cause analysis, corrective actions and lessons learned.
  • Contribute to strategic, communication and training initiatives across the wider RAMS function.

About you

You’ll be an experienced RAMS or System Assurance professional with a strong understanding of safety-critical engineering and the ability to combine technical expertise with confident stakeholder management.

We’re looking for:

  • A strong Technical Safety and RAM engineering background.
  • Knowledge and experience of railway systems and assets.
  • Experience applying Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) and Engineering Safety techniques, methods and tools.
  • Knowledge and experience of railway RAMS standards including EN50126, EN50716 and EN50129, alongside European Railway Regulation for Safety and Interoperability.
  • Experience delivering RAMS activities within the rail or construction industry.
  • Experience within System Assurance.
  • A demonstrable track record of delivering safety solutions through approval and into operation.
  • Experience developing Safety Cases for complex and safety-critical systems.
  • The ability to lead work packages and undertake independent investigations.
  • Strong analytical skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and influence stakeholders while managing competing priorities.

Knowledge of UK mainline railway signalling, control and information systems, experience developing complex Safety Cases and Risk Assessments, and Chartered Engineer status or membership of a relevant professional body would be advantageous.
