This role focuses on forensic investigation and expert opinion related to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing building systems, with a strong emphasis on independent expert report preparation and courtroom testimony.\nThe successful candidate will bring substantial building systems design and construction experience and will be trusted by clients and counsel to deliver clear, defensible opinions on causation, standard of care, and responsibility in contested legal environments.\nResponsibilities\nForensic & Litigation Consulting\nLead forensic investigations involving failures, deficiencies, and performance disputes associated with building MEP systems.\nEvaluate causation related to HVAC systems, electrical distribution, emergency power, lighting, plumbing, fire protection, and life safety systems.\nDetermine responsibility associated with design intent, construction practices, commissioning, operation, and maintenance.\nPrepare independent, litigation-ready expert reports suitable for use in arbitration, mediation, and court proceedings.\nProvide expert witness testimony under oath at deposition, arbitration, and trial, including experience under cross-examination.\nConsult directly with legal counsel, insurers, owners, and developers on dispute strategy, evidentiary issues, and remediation options.\nTechnical Expertise\nReview and analyze drawings, specifications, calculations, commissioning records, test reports, and maintenance documentation.\nConduct site inspections, system testing, and performance evaluations.\nAssess compliance with applicable Canadian codes and standards (CSA, National Building Code of Canada, provincial amendments).\nDevelop technically sound remediation and repair recommendations.\nSkills and Qualifications\nRequired\nBachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Building Systems Engineering.\n\nProfessional Engineer (P.Eng.) license in at least one Canadian province.\n\n15+ years of MEP engineering experience, including investigation of building system failures and deficiencies.\n\nSignificant forensic engineering and dispute consulting experience.\n\nRecent, ongoing Expert Witness experience, including testimony in depositions, arbitrations, and/or court proceedings.\n\nAbility to prepare clear, defensible expert reports for litigation and dispute matters.\n\nExperience working directly with legal counsel, insurers, owners, and other dispute stakeholders.\n\nAbility to manage multiple assignments and litigation-driven deadlines.\n\nAbility to travel as required for client and project needs, including occasional short-notice travel.\n\nPreferred\nAdvanced degree in a related engineering discipline.\n\nRegistration or eligibility for registration in multiple Canadian provinces.\n\nBusiness development and client relationship management experience.\n\nWhat we offer:\nAt HKA we recognize that our people are critical to our ongoing success.
