Senior Backend Software Engineer - Horizon Quantum Computing

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Senior Backend Software Engineer to drive progress on the company’s platform and support the emerging field of quantum computing. The ideal candidate will bring significant expertise to a fast-growing team, with deep technical knowledge of programming languages and backend software development, as well as a strong understanding of scalability and distributed systems considerations.

Good communication skills, motivation and the ability to work within a diverse team dispersed across multiple time-zones are a must. You will work closely with the Science, Product and Design teams to influence the software architecture for our development tools, and help drive progress towards the company’s vision of being the leading software developer tool for quantum programming.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend systems, APIs, and distributed services using modern technologies
• Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code for backend infrastructure, services, and data processing pipelines
• Collaborate with software engineers, scientists, designers, and product managers to implement, integrate, test, deploy, and maintain Horizon’s products
• Maintain Horizon’s professional software development standards and engineering best practices
• Work effectively across multidisciplinary teams to design and implement robust backend architectures and platform services
• Innovate and solve complex technical challenges in support of Horizon’s product development, implementing reliable and scalable solutions in code
• Proactively contribute to and execute the software and platform roadmap
• Provide timely, accurate, and well-researched technical guidance to the Director of Engineering
• Identify architectural or technical gaps, recommend improvements, and implement solutions to enhance scalability, reliability, and performance
• Mentor junior engineers and support their technical growth and professional development
• Maintain clear technical documentation and communicate results internally and externally where required
• Contribute to technical reports, research papers, and engineering documentation as needed by the company
• Collaborate with employees and external partners to develop and protect novel intellectual property relating to quantum hardware and software innovations
• Stay up to date with advancements in backend engineering, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and software development practices

Essential Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in software engineering, electronics engineering or related technology area
• At least 5 years relevant software engineering experience in a high performing team
• Strong understanding of modern backend architectures, distributed systems, APIs, and service-oriented design
• Strong, demonstrable knowledge or skills in the following:
  • Back-end: Python, Go, or similar
  • Database systems: PostgreSQL, MongoDB
  • API development and integration: RESTful APIs and backend services
  • Messaging, concurrency, and scalable system design principles
• Experience designing, building, and maintaining scalable, reliable, and high-performance backend systems
• Knowledge of version control systems (Git, SVN), agile development methodologies, and modern software engineering practices
• Experience deploying and operating backend services in cloud environments
• Strong understanding of testing, debugging, observability, and performance optimisation techniques
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams
• Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on writing maintainable, production-quality code
• Proven track record of delivering high-quality software, features, and systems on schedule
• Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies and technical domains

Desirable Requirements

• Masters Degree in Software Engineering or a related field
