You drive the long-term technical vision of our platform, guiding how we design, build, and evolve scalable, reliable systems across multiple squads. As a high-impact, high-autonomy technical leader, you combine deep technical expertise with influential cross-team collaboration, helping shape the future of our platform to better serve our customers. You serve as your Engineering Director's primary technical partner and a trusted technical partner to Engineering Managers and Product leadership, taking ownership of our most complex technical challenges while mentoring engineers across the organization. You have no home squad: together with a second Staff+, you cover the six squads of our core product organization in Poland (Scheduling, Estimates, Service Plans, Recurring Jobs, Customers and Online Booking), one of the most business-critical areas of our platform. You play a pivotal role in our transition from a monolithic Ruby on Rails application toward a modern, distributed, event-driven, domain-oriented architecture. Their success is our success.\nWhat you do each day:\nAct as your Engineering Director's technical eyes across multiple squads: proactively bring risks, concerns and ideas, and dig into suspicious code, PRs or designs when asked, coming back with clear findings\nDrive application performance, quality, and responsiveness across core domain systems\nCollaborate with interdisciplinary development teams, engineering leaders, and architects to design high-performance, scalable, and reliable architecture\nEstablish clear sub-system boundaries and make strategic recommendations regarding functionality placement across sub-systems\nDevelop and maintain code quality standards, conduct code and architectural reviews, and coach teams across the organization to adopt standards aligned with system design principles\nProactively identify and drive architectural enhancements and strategic refactorings to optimize system scalability and maintainability\nGuide teams in designing automated tests at optimal architectural layers to maximize signal and minimize brittleness\nMaintain and improve continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) environments\nMentor engineers across the organization to elevate overall technical capabilities and domain knowledge\nLead cross-squad initiatives that no single squad owns, represent our domains in company-wide architecture discussions, and connect company-wide technical direction (e.g., sharding, identity and access management (IAM), monolith decomposition) back to the squads\nCompensation: 9,600 - 12,000 USD per month (B2B)\n\nQualifications:\n9+ years of experience designing, building, and operating complex production systems\nDeep experience with modern backend frameworks (i.e. Ruby on Rails, Django, Spring Boot)\nProficiency in multiple programming languages (i.e. JavaScript, Python, Go, Java, Node.js)\nDeep expertise with cloud platforms (i.e. AWS), containerization, and serverless/cloud-native architectures\nProven success applying Domain-Driven Design (DDD) principles across multiple teams or domains\nExperience architecting and building event-driven systems using distributed messaging tools (i.e. Kafka, SQS)\nExperience defining and improving continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines (i.e. Jenkins, GitLab) and automated testing strategies\nExpertise in scalable Application Programming Interface (API) design and management (i.e. RESTful APIs, GraphQL)\nStrong background in system observability practices and performance diagnostics\nProven experience driving team efficiency or output quality through the strategic use of AI tools and automation\nBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent work experience\nWhat will help you succeed in this role:\nOwnership mentality with a balance of urgency and long-term system health\nA multi-dimensional background with a breadth of cross-functional interests or depth of specialized mastery\nPersonal resilience to learn from scratch, and successfully thrive in ambiguity\nComfort with frequent context switching: this is not a single-project role, but the Engineering Director's technical right hand across a large, business-critical organization\nAbility to quickly build deep knowledge of a large, complex system, so you can spot problems before others do\nStrong written communication and a track record of influencing without authority and coaching senior engineers across teams\nSounds interesting?
