The role collaborates with hardware engineers to integrate software and firmware with hardware components, ensuring seamless communication and functionality. The role works closely with software developers, hardware engineers, quality assurance, and product managers to deliver high-quality products. Additionally, the role is involved in end-to-end firmware feature development across multiple system layers (e.g. low-level hardware configurations to high-level application/feature logic and user interfaces), requiring strong system-level thinking and cross-domain integration expertise. The role is expected to leverage modern development tools, AI-assisted coding, and automation practices to improve engineering productivity, quality and innovation. Responsibilities\nDesigns enhancements, updates, and programming changes for portions and subsystems of firmware, including DSP, embedded code, EFI drivers, EFI applications and BIOS/UEFI.\nAnalyzes design and determines coding, programming, and integration activities required based on general objectives and knowledge of overall architecture of product or solution.\nWrites and executes complete testing plans, protocols, and documentation for assigned portion of application; creates solutions for issues with code and integrates into application architecture.\nOwns end-to-end feature development from requirements definition, design, implementation, integration, to validation across firmware layers.\nPerforms deep system-level debugging across hardware, firmware, and software interfaces, utilizing logs, tracing, and diagnostic tools to resolve complex issues. • Allocates resources to complete programming projects, and designing detailed plans to ensure firmware is functioning properly.\nOwns the preparation and creation of instructional technical manuscripts for firmware operation. • Leads a project team of other software firmware engineers and internal and outsourced development partners to develop reliable, cost effective and high quality solutions for assigned systems portion or subsystem. • Collaborates and communicates with management, internal, and outsourced development partners regarding firmware design status, project progress, and issue resolution. • Represents the software firmware engineering team for all phases of larger and more-complex development projects, from microarchitecture design through firmware architecture and development. • Collaborates with cross-functional teams including architects, hardware engineers, software developers, and product managers to ensure that firmware requirements and specifications are clearly defined.\nDrives system architecture alignment across modules to ensure scalability, reusability, and maintainability across multiple programs. • Applies modern development practices (e.g., CI/CD, automation, AI-assisted coding using GitHub Copilot) to improve development efficiency and quality. • Stays up-to-date with industry trends and advancements in firmware technologies, and provide recommendations for improvement.\nMentors junior engineers and drives technical excellence, coding best practices, and knowledge sharing within the team.\nEducation & Experience Recommended\nFour-year or Graduate Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, or any other related discipline or commensurate work experience or demonstrated competence.\nTypically has 4-7 years of work experience, preferably in firmware development, or a related field or an advanced degree with 3-5 years of work experience.\nExperience in end-to-end product/feature development in embedded systems and colour scienceis advantageous.\n Preferred Certifications\nNA (Optional: Embedded systems, Linux, or AI/ML certifications are advantageous)\nKnowledge & Skills\n Core Technical Skills\nAgile Methodology\nC / C++ (Strong proficiency in embedded environments)\nPython (for automation, scripting, and test frameworks)\nEmbedded Systems / Firmware Development\nReal-Time Operating Systems (RTOS)\nLinux / Embedded Linux\nDevice Drivers and Hardware Abstraction Layers\nSystem Integration and Debugging\n Tools & Modern Development Practices\nGit (Version Control System)\nVS Code or equivalent modern IDEs\nGitHub Copilot or AI-assisted development tools\nCI/CD pipelines, automated build and test systems\nDebugging tools (JTAG, trace tools, protocol analyzers, logging frameworks)\n System Engineering & Architecture\nStrong system-level design and problem-solving skills\nAbility to understand and debug interactions across hardware, firmware, and software layers\nNew Product Introduction (NPI) experience\nFirmware architecture and modular design\nAdditional Skills\nAlgorithms and data structures\nSoftware Engineering best practices\nOperating Systems Cross-Org Skills\nEffective Communication\nResults Orientation\nLearning Agility\nDigital Fluency\nCustomer Centricity\nTechnical Leadership & Mentorship • Innovative and Growth Mindset Impact & Scope • Impacts multiple teams and may act as a team or project leader providing direction to team activities and facilitates information validation and team decision making process.\nDrives cross-domain feature delivery and contributes to overall firmware architecture and strategy across products.
