This role carries both technical and people accountability: setting engineering direction, shaping solution design, developing leaders and teams, and ensuring predictable delivery and resilient operations. You will partner with product, design, API, architecture, data, cybersecurity, operations and business teams to turn the Americas digital roadmap into accessible, high-performing and trusted customer journeys.\nMain activities\nOwn the engineering strategy and execution roadmap for mobile, web, digital experience layers and the integration components that connect channels to enterprise platforms.\nGuide architecture for responsive web and native or cross-platform mobile applications, backend-for-frontend services, orchestration, events, caching, content delivery and third-party integrations.\nTranslate product priorities and customer research into executable engineering plans, balancing speed, quality, accessibility, reuse, regulatory commitments and technical debt.\nWork with the API Platforms leader to define clear service contracts, integration patterns, dependency plans and end-to-end ownership across digital journeys.\nRemain technically engaged through architecture and design reviews, engineering health reviews, critical code or implementation discussions, and leadership during major incidents.\nEmbed secure software development, automated testing, continuous delivery, feature management, telemetry and experimentation into the digital delivery lifecycle.\nOwn non-functional quality across performance, resilience, accessibility, compatibility, privacy, fraud controls and production support for digital channels.\nEstablish effective release, incident, problem and service-management practices, using production insights and customer feedback to drive improvement.\nEvaluate and adopt modern engineering practices, including responsible AI-assisted development and AI-enabled customer experiences, within security and model-risk guardrails.\nManage engineering budgets, capacity and vendor outcomes, and use metrics to improve flow, quality, reliability and cost effectiveness.\nRequirements\nSoftware engineering experience, including substantial experience delivering and operating large-scale mobile, web or omnichannel platforms.\nDemonstrated experience leading multiple engineering teams and managers in a large, global or matrixed organization.\nStrong knowledge of modern web and mobile architecture, distributed systems, API and event integration, cloud platforms, CI/CD, automated testing, observability and site reliability.\nExperience delivering secure, accessible and high-performing customer journeys with measurable product and operational outcomes.\nTrack record of modernizing complex estates, managing cross-platform dependencies and sustaining service during significant change.\nStrong stakeholder management and commercial judgment, with the ability to make clear trade-offs across product value, risk, time and cost.\nHSBC is an equal opportunity employer committed to building a culture where all employees are valued, respected and opinions count.
