Overview
Principal Performance & Scale Engineer
Location: Hyderabad Work Arrangement: Hybrid - 2 days per week in the office
About the Role
We're looking for a strategically minded and technically exceptional Principal Performance & Scale Engineer to architect Hyland's organization-wide performance engineering strategy. You'll translate customer behavior and business priorities into performance SLOs, scalability targets, and infrastructure decisions that guide all of engineering.
This isn't a role about running tests - it's about defining what matters, establishing how we measure it, and driving action when reality diverges from goals. You'll work backwards from customer outcomes, ensuring every benchmark, every metric, and every analysis exists to inform better engineering choices - not just generate data. If you thrive at the intersection of deep technical expertise, cross-functional influence, and strategic thinking, we'd love to connect.
Your Role Responsibilities? Here's What You'll Do.
- Define and own the organization-wide performance engineering strategy - establishing which customer archetypes to benchmark against, which metrics matter, and which trade-offs engineering teams should make to deliver consistent, production-representative results.
- Establish performance SLOs and scalability envelopes tied directly to real ECM usage patterns; design infrastructure recommendations based on performance analysis - identifying configuration gaps, resource allocation inefficiencies, and architectural constraints that limit scale.
- Apply machine learning to performance data for anomaly detection, predictive bottleneck identification, and automated root-cause analysis; surface patterns in telemetry that signal architectural risks or optimization opportunities before customers encounter them.
- Define shared performance frameworks across engineering teams so latency SLOs, throughput targets, and scalability trade-offs speak one language org-wide; partner with feature teams during design reviews to surface scalability risks early and validate changes at production scale.
- Work backwards from customer outcomes - ensuring every benchmark, every metric, and every analysis exists to inform better engineering choices rather than simply generate data.
- Coach engineers across the organization on performance profiling, load generation, and building diagnosable systems - raising the performance engineering bar org-wide through credibility and judgment, not authority.
Technology Tools
- Cloud Platforms: AWS, GCP & Azure
- Container & Orchestration: Kubernetes & Terraform
- Distributed System Profiling Tools
- ML/AI Performance & Anomaly Detection Tools
- CI/CD & Benchmark Automation Pipelines
- Observability & Telemetry Platforms (Prometheus, Grafana, or equivalent)
Role Essentials
- 10+ years defining performance strategy at enterprise scale - with a track record of determining what to test and why, not just how to run tests; deep expertise in distributed systems, capacity planning, and architectural bottleneck analysis.
- Proven track record of earning trust from executives, PMs, and customer-facing teams - your insights consistently inform roadmap and architecture decisions at the highest levels of the organization.
- Hands-on experience benchmarking multi-tenant or high-scale platforms with realistic, production-representative workloads; demonstrated ability to build reproducible benchmarks at scale and make them stick across engineering teams.
- Mastery across cloud-native stacks - Kubernetes, AWS/GCP/Azure, Terraform, and distributed system profiling tools - with a systems-level view of performance as a design signal, not just a metric.
- Applied experience with ML/AI in performance analysis - including anomaly detection, predictive modeling, and intelligent test generation; proven cross-functional influence in aligning multiple engineering teams on shared performance standards through credibility and judgment.
What We'd Like to See
- SRE background with hands-on SLO definition and operational defense - bridging performance engineering and site reliability practices across engineering organizations.
- Experience maintaining living performance documentation - including baselines, runbooks, and scalability trade-off explainers - that enable engineering and product teams to make confident, data-driven decisions.
- Exposure to AI workload benchmarking - including LLM inference performance, GPU utilization, and serving-system scalability in enterprise AI environments.
- Experience with CI/CD-integrated benchmark pipelines and automated regression detection - ensuring performance results are actionable and triaged within hours, not days.
- Demonstrated ability to surface patterns in production telemetry that signal architectural risks or optimization opportunities months before customers encounter them - protecting customer experience proactively.
