Location: San Jose, CA, USA\nJob Type: Internship, Co-op (Fixed Term), On-site\nResponsibilities:\nConduct research on next-generation storage systems for AI and agentic AI.\nInvestigate fundamental challenges involving system performance, scalability, and efficiency.\nDevelop novel ideas and system designs for AI, systems, and storage research.\nBuild prototypes and evaluate their performance at scale.\nDemonstrate the real-world impact of research projects;\nPublish research findings in leading scientific venues.\nPerform system performance measurement, benchmarking, and analysis.\nDesign and implement distributed systems and storage systems.\nWork with Linux environments, including system administration and programming.\nCollaborate with scientists, engineers, and researchers across IBM Research.\nContribute to research at the intersection of high-performance computing, AI, quantum computing, and cloud technologies.\nQualifications:\nCurrently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, with a focus on systems or the intersection of systems and AI.\nBachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.\nExperience with system performance measurement and analysis.\nProgramming experience with Python, Go, Bash, or Rust;\nExperience using, administering, and programming in Linux environments.\nExperience with Kubernetes, Docker, and Git.\nBasic understanding of the Linux storage stack.\nStrong interest in systems research.\nPreferred:\nUnderstanding of LLM technology and distributed inference.\nFamiliarity with llm-d, vLLM, and KVCache.\nExperience designing and implementing distributed systems and storage systems.\nExperience with GPU programming.\nKnowledge of high-performance storage systems.\nC++ programming experience.\nBenefits and Compensation:\nProjected annualized compensation range of $89,280 to $163,680, depending on skills, experience, and location.\nEligible Supplemental 1 employees may receive up to 8 paid holidays.\nMinimum of 56 hours of paid sick time.\nAccess to the IBM Employee Stock Purchase Plan;\nPaid family medical leave and disability benefits where required by applicable law.\nAccess to IBM's learning and professional development resources.\nOpportunity to work alongside leading scientists and engineers in AI, systems, storage, high-performance computing, quantum computing, and cloud research.\nOther Information:\nWork arrangement: On-site.\nTravel: No travel required.\nEmployment: Co-op, fixed term.\nJob ID: 132567.\n Application deadline: The position is expected to remain posted for 15 days from September 11, 2026, or until the role is filled.\nIBM does not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
