An FPGA Firmware Engineer at ST Engineering iDirect works within the engineering department in a SCRUM team using an Agile framework. The candidate will be responsible for participating in the specification, design, development, testing, and support features for a satellite communications system from concept through completion. He/she will be a highly motivated self-starter with strong written and oral communication skills and work well in a team environment. All applicants are evaluated on their qualifications, and export-control status information is collected and used solely for regulatory compliance purposes.\nResponsibilities\nDevelop FPGA firmware using Vhdl/ Verilog/System Verilog for continuous and burst mode satellite earth station modems with a strong emphasis on DSP and communications algorithm implementation, efficient data path architecture, reliable timing closures, and high-performance implementations.\n\nDesign and implement system-on-chip solutions that use embedded ARM processors such as Altera Arria10 and Stratix SX FPGAs, DDR memories, fast serial interfaces such as JESD-204B, 1G/10G/40G Ethernet interfaces, and more.\n\nParticipate in code reviews, design reviews, and contribute towards FPGA Design methodologies.\n\nUse efficient lab techniques (e.g. Signal Tap, System Console, scripting, and automation) to integrate modules and troubleshoot problems.\n\nWork in close collaboration with hardware and software engineers throughout the integration process to ensure that FPGA designs are correctly implemented.\n\nActively maintain expertise and an awareness of the state of the art in wireless modem implementation technologies such as FPGAs, DSP processors, and ARM processors embedded within FPGAs.\n\nOther duties as assigned.\n\nQualifications\nBachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, a related subject area, or equivalent experience\n\n3+years of experience in FPGA-centric digital logic design with most of the following attributes.\n\nExperience with volume-production quality FPGA designs where optimization for speed is of critical importance.\n\nExperience with hands-on lab debugging and building automated test systems.\n\nStrong mathematical analysis and modeling skills in fixed-point DSP algorithms.\n\nExperience with modems such as DVB-S2x, understanding all specific modem parameters.\n\nExperience with RF and digital hardware.\n\nExperience with embedded Linux platforms.\n\nExperience with digital communications theory and DSP algorithms.Experience with Wireless communications is preferred.\n\nExperience with IP networking protocols.\n\nStrong verbal and written communication skills.\n\nExperience with OpenCL and HLS is an asset.\n\nCan explain a defined architecture and work on an abstract and conceptual level.\n\nProfessional Qualities\nStrong problem-solving and communication skills.\n\nMust be a self-motivated individual with technical leadership potential and proven success in a structured development environment.\n\nPossess the ability to proactively drive technical solutions in a collaborative environment.\n\nGood software design skills using proven and best practice design methodologies & related principles; Strong command of Object-Oriented Design and Object-Oriented Programming techniques.\n\nDemonstrated experience in developing quality and maintainable software.\n\nStrong documentation and writing skills.","description_format":"text","description_chars":5726,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":3,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Military","Satellite Communications","Military Communication"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-09-26T21:01:22Z"}],"liveness":{"score":81,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":0.9,"p_active":0.903,"p_room":1,"age_days":3,"expected_fill_days":41,"reasons":["conf:77","velocity","win:early"],"computed_at":"2026-09-30T05:45:00Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/idirect-fpga-firmware-engineer","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/idirect-fpga-firmware-engineer.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-01T03:15:23Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","usage":{"tier":"crawler","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":2729,"day_limit":5000,"remaining_today":2271,"minute_limit":60,"resets_at":"2026-10-02T00:00:00Z"}}}
