Their\n\nperformance depends not only on optical filters and photodetectors but also on\n\nthe electrical readout and signal processing circuits. Designing compact\n\nimaging spectrometers requires efficient readout integrated circuits (ROICs)\n\nand controller architectures that provide accurate signal acquisition while\n\nmaintaining low noise, high dynamic range, and low power consumption. This project explores electrical\n\nsignal processing ASIC architectures for imaging spectrometers, focusing on the\n\nintegration of photodetector readout, signal conditioning, and mixed-signal\n\ncircuit design. System-level modeling and circuit simulations will be used to\n\nevaluate the interactions between optical response, detector characteristics,\n\nand electrical readout performance. What You Will Do You will get the chance to: \n\n Investigate\n\n ROIC and controller ASIC architectures , including detector biasing,\n\n signal integration, amplification, sampling, and analog-to-digital\n\n conversion. \n\n Develop\n\n behavioral and circuit-level models to evaluate electrical signal\n\n processing requirements and system performance. \n\n Design\n\n and simulate analog and mixed-signal circuits for photodetector interfaces\n\n using appropriate EDA tools. \n\n Evaluate\n\n optical–electrical system trade-offs , including noise, dynamic\n\n range, spectral accuracy, acquisition speed, and power consumption. \n\n Support\n\n circuit verification and prototype evaluation , potentially including\n\n layout-related activities and experimental characterization. Your design work will be supported\n\nby system-level analysis and circuit simulations to understand how electrical\n\ndesign choices influence imaging spectrometer performance. You will also have\n\nthe opportunity to collaborate with experienced researchers and engineers in an\n\ninternational multidisciplinary research environment. Requirements The project offers experience in\n\nanalog and mixed-signal ASIC design, sensor interface circuits, and electrical\n\nsignal processing for imaging spectrometers. A background in electrical\n\nengineering, electronic circuits, semiconductor devices, or integrated circuit\n\ndesign is desirable. Experience with circuit simulation tools,\n\nVerilog/SystemVerilog, Python, or MATLAB is an advantage. The balance between\n\narchitecture development, circuit design, and system-level analysis can be\n\nadjusted to the candidate's background and interests. A strong command of\n\nEnglish is essential for effective communication. Time Distribution 40% ASIC architecture and circuit\n\ndesign, 30% modeling and simulation, 20% verification and characterization, 10%\n\nliterature study and reporting Type of internship : Master internship Duration : 12months Required educational background : Electrotechnics/Electrical Engineering University promotor : Jan Genoe (KU Leuven) Supervising scientist(s) : For further information or for application, please contact Jaewon Nam ( ) and Gokhan Kara ( ) The reference code for this position is 2026-INT-325 .
