At imec, these bio-interfaces\n\nare a key enabler for advanced health technologies that combine microfluidics,\n\nphotonics, and sensing on chip. Examples include platforms for label-free cell\n\ncharacterization in cell therapy workflows and photonic waveguide-based systems\n\nfor monitoring organ-on-chip models. Optimizing functional coatings in these\n\nmicrofluidic environments is therefore essential to achieve high sensitivity,\n\nspecificity, and reproducibility.   In this\n\ninternship, the student will help develop and optimize surface\n\nfunctionalization protocols for next-generation biosensing platforms that\n\noperate with microfluidic channels. The work will involve preparing and testing\n\ntailored surface coatings, evaluating antibody immobilization and target\n\ncapture, and comparing strategies to improve assay performance. The student\n\nwill also contribute to methods for assessing the quality of the\n\nbiofunctionalized surfaces, with a focus on reproducibility, stability, and\n\nrobustness. To support this, the project will combine laboratory experiments and\n\ndata analysis using physical characterization, fluorescence imaging, and\n\nstatistical design-of-experiments. The overall goal is to build robust antibody-based\n\ninterfaces that improve the performance of biosensors and related lab-on-chip\n\nsystems.   This internship\n\noffers 4–12 months of hands-on research experience in imec’s multidisciplinary\n\ninnovation environment. It is well suited for a student with an interest in\n\nsurface chemistry, bio-interface engineering, or microfluidics, and offers the\n\nopportunity to gain practical experience with advanced analytical techniques\n\nand experimental design. The project includes independent laboratory work under\n\nclose supervision, combined with data analysis and scientific reporting. The\n\nresults will contribute to advanced biosensing technologies for diagnostics,\n\ncell therapy, and personalized medicine.
