Position Overview
The Portfolio Manager of Collections and Workout oversees the post-closing health of the small business loan portfolio. Unlike traditional commercial banking collections, a CDFI workout manager focuses on partner-focused mitigation-working closely with underserved small business owners facing financial hardship to restructure debt, provide specialized support, and preserve both the fund’s capital and the small business itself.
When necessary, this role also manages formal default, liquidation, and recovery processes.
Key Responsibilities
1. Portfolio Monitoring & Early Intervention
- Monitor the loan portfolio for early warning signs of financial distress, including missed payments, declining cash flow, or industry downturns.
- Conduct regular reviews of risky or modified loans, ensuring risk ratings accurately reflect the current probability of default.
- Reach out proactively to borrowers experiencing delinquency to understand the root causes of their financial challenges.
2. Loan Workouts & Restructuring
- Analyze borrower financial statements, tax returns, and cash flow projections to determine viability and debt service capacity.
- Design, negotiate, and execute formal workout agreements, including loan modifications, payment deferrals, interest rate adjustments, or principal forbearance.
- Collaborate with the internal Technical Assistance (TA) team to pair struggling borrowers with business coaching or advisory services.
3. Collections, Liquidation & Asset Recovery
- Manage collection activities for delinquent accounts, maintaining compliance with all state and federal lending laws.
- Coordinate legal actions with outside counsel when workout options are exhausted (e.g., foreclosures, repossessions, or bankruptcies).
- Oversee the liquidation of collateral and asset recovery to minimize the fund's Loan Loss Reserves.
4. Compliance & Reporting
- Prepare monthly and quarterly delinquency, workout effectiveness, and non-performing asset reports for management and the Loan Committee.
- Assist in evaluating and calculating the Allowance for Loan and Lease Losses (ALLL).
- Ensure all workout agreements conform to internal credit policies and external funder/regulatory compliance requirements.
