Engineer-Information Services Intermediate

Indiana University Health is seeking individuals who embody these values to join our Information Services team in the role of Engineer-Information Services Intermediate.

Summary

The IS Engineer - Intermediary (Microsoft 365 Engineering) is responsible for the operational support, engineering, administration, and continuous improvement of IU Health's Microsoft 365 platform. This role serves as a technical bridge between administrators, senior engineers, architects, cybersecurity teams, and business stakeholders.

The Intermediary Engineer independently manages moderately complex technical issues, participates in enterprise projects, implements platform enhancements, and supports governance and security initiatives across the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. The position combines operational excellence with engineering responsibilities to ensure the reliability, security, compliance, and adoption of collaboration and productivity technologies used throughout IU Health.

This role is expected to balance daily operational support with project execution and continuous platform improvement activities while helping IU Health maximize its investment in Microsoft technologies.

    • Exchange Online
    • Microsoft Teams
    • OneDrive for Business
    • SharePoint Online
    • Microsoft Entra ID
    • Power Platform
    • Microsoft Lists
    • Viva services
    • Microsoft Copilot
    • Microsoft Purview
  • Configure and support platform features according to enterprise architecture and governance standards.
  • Assist in evaluating and implementing new Microsoft features and services.
  • Participate in product lifecycle management, service optimization, and technology modernization efforts.
  • Contribute to standards development, technical documentation, and operational processes.

Candidate Qualifications

Candidates for the position will be evaluated according to the following criteria and competencies.

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience required.
  • Healthcare, health insurance and health providers experience and understanding of processes is preferred.
  • Experience working with hypervisors and scripting required.
  • Requires experience working with vendors to quote moderately complex solutions.
  • Cloud experience is preferred.

Role Responsibilities

Security, Compliance & Governance

  • Support governance initiatives across the Microsoft 365 environment.
  • Assist with implementation and maintenance of:
    • Data Loss Prevention (DLP)
    • Information Protection
    • Retention Policies
    • Records Management
    • Insider Risk controls
    • eDiscovery solutions
    • Compliance reporting
  • Partner with Cybersecurity and Privacy teams to ensure regulatory and organizational requirements are met.
  • Participate in security reviews, assessments, and remediation efforts.
  • Support organizational initiatives related to Microsoft Copilot readiness and data governance.

These responsibilities directly align with staffing justifications and platform growth efforts identified within Productivity Management documentation.

Operational Excellence (KTLO)

  • Provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 support for Microsoft 365 services.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical incidents and service requests.
  • Perform root cause analysis on recurring issues.
  • Participate in on-call support and major incident response as required.
  • Review Microsoft roadmap changes and assess operational impacts.
  • Support platform patching, upgrades, configuration changes, and service health monitoring.
  • Maintain accurate system documentation, diagrams, and knowledge articles.

Automation & Engineering

  • Develop and maintain PowerShell automation solutions.
  • Support Azure automation, workflows, and operational scripting.
  • Automate repetitive administrative processes and operational tasks.
  • Improve efficiency through process standardization and automation.
  • Assist with integration efforts involving Microsoft cloud services and third-party platforms.

Project Delivery

  • Participate in enterprise technology initiatives and strategic programs.
  • Execute technical tasks within project plans under guidance from senior engineers and architects.
  • Support migrations, platform upgrades, and adoption initiatives.
  • Assist with pilot programs and proof-of-concept activities.
  • Support organization-wide deployment efforts for emerging Microsoft technologies.

Examples include initiatives involving Copilot, Purview, governance enhancements, collaboration modernization, and future Microsoft service offerings.

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Work closely with:
    • Security teams
    • Infrastructure teams
    • Identity teams
    • Service Management
    • Application teams
    • Business stakeholders
    • Microsoft partners and vendors
  • Mentor junior administrators and analysts.
  • Contribute knowledge to team training and operational readiness activities.
  • Communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Promote operational consistency and adherence to established standards.
