ING is a Dutch banking group formed in 1991 by the merger of the postal bank NMB Postbank and the insurer Nationale-Nederlanden, and it was among the first large banks to build a direct, branch-light retail model. It serves retail customers in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Spain and several other markets through mobile-first banking, and runs a substantial wholesale bank covering lending, transaction services and financial markets for corporate clients. Headquartered in Amsterdam and listed on Euronext, the group divested its insurance operations after the financial crisis to focus on banking.

We are looking for a Dutch-speaking Economist to strengthen our macroeconomics team in Amsterdam, with a particular focus on households. In this role, you will help develop data-driven insights on consumer spending, household income, savings, confidence and broader economic developments. Working with unique proprietary data, you will contribute to distinctive economic analysis and research that informs clients, colleagues and senior stakeholders. You will have the opportunity to shape research projects from idea to publication while collaborating with experts across the team.

The team

You will be part of an international team with a focus on European economies.

Marieke Blom, Chief Economist and Head of Research: “We are a dedicated team, where team members enjoy a feeling of personal accomplishment. We are also a very international team, where people feel they can be themselves at work. We create insights on developments that impact the future for people and businesses. Anticipating the change is an opportunity to help shape it. If this is something that appeals to you, then you will be a great addition to the team.”

Roles and responsibilities

In this role you will:

  • Develop clear, data-driven insights on consumer spending, household income, savings, confidence and broader macroeconomic developments.

  • Analyse unique proprietary data and translate those insights into distinctive economic analysis.

  • Write economic research independently.

  • Manage and coordinate research processes.

  • Translate economic developments into relevant insights for clients, colleagues and other senior stakeholders.

  • Create presentations on economic themes for both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

  • Lead research processes from asking the right question through to sharing and presenting the output.

  • Coordinate with colleagues on both content and process to ensure analysis is relevant, clear, accurate and delivered on time.

How to succeed

At ING, we value curiosity, analytical thinking and a willingness to learn. We recognise that talent comes in many forms and encourage you to apply even if you don't meet every requirement listed below. We're looking for someone who brings:

  • Experience in economic research or a related analytical field.

  • An MSc in Economics or a comparable discipline.

  • Quantitative and programming skills, or the willingness to further develop these capabilities.

  • Knowledge of macroeconomics and an interest in household and consumer behaviour.

  • The ability to develop and contribute to research projects, both independently and in collaboration with colleagues.

  • Experience working with large datasets and applying data responsibly.

  • Clear written communication skills and the ability to translate data into meaningful and engaging insights.

  • The ability to communicate complex economic topics to a range of audiences.

  • Fluency in Dutch and professional English language skills.
