ING is a Dutch banking group formed in 1991 by the merger of the postal bank NMB Postbank and the insurer Nationale-Nederlanden, and it was among the first large banks to build a direct, branch-light retail model. It serves retail customers in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Spain and several other markets through mobile-first banking, and runs a substantial wholesale bank covering lending, transaction services and financial markets for corporate clients. Headquartered in Amsterdam and listed on Euronext, the group divested its insurance operations after the financial crisis to focus on banking.

We’re looking for a highly motivated and analytical individual who’s eager to learn about the financial sector and client coverage within an international banking environment.

The team

At ING’s Financial Institutions Coverage team, you’ll join an international, purpose-driven bank where you can make an impact from day one. You’ll work in a dynamic environment with global reach, learning from experienced professionals and gaining exposure to a wide range of products within financial institutions. ING offers a supportive culture, strong learning opportunities, and the chance to grow within a team that values initiative, collaboration, and personal development. You will work with colleagues and clients across Europe, Asia, and the US through ING’s extensive international network, and you’ll be treated as a full member of the team-actively contributing to client meetings, product discussions, and strategic analyses. You will be part of a bank committed to sustainable finance, innovation, and helping customers stay a step ahead in life and in business.

The Financial Institutions Coverage team at ING manages relationships with a diverse group of financial sector clients - including banks, insurers, asset managers, pension funds, financial sponsors, and payment service providers - across the Netherlands andthe Nordics. Our mission is to deliver tailored financial solutions by connecting clients to ING’s global product suite, including Lending, Transaction Services, Financial Markets, and Capital Markets & Advisory.

Your role

As an Intern in the Financial Institutions Coverage team, you will support our Relationship Managers and you will be exposed to the full client relationship dialogue - from strategy and analysis to execution and client interaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of client pitch books, financial analyses, and sector briefings
  • Help coordinate deal execution across product teams, risk, legal, and compliance
  • Conduct market and client analysis to identify new opportunities and trends within the FI sector
  • Support relationship managers in day-to-day client management and business development
  • Contribute to internal projects, such as product mapping and client portfolio analysis
  • Monitor KYC activities for clients and ensure customer data information systems are kept up to date

How to succeed

  • A Master’s or third year Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Strong academic results, combined with extracurricular activities
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, with high attention to detail
  • Prior relevant work experience is a plus (Banking, Corporate Finance, Advisory/Consulting)
  • Self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit and outstanding work ethic
  • High proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint; experience with Capital IQ, Bloomberg, or data tools is a plus
  • Fluent in English (Dutch or another European language is a plus)

What we offer

  • Hands-on experience in live transactions and client engagements.
  • Gain deep exposure to ING’s financial products and institutional client coverage model
  • A unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience in institutional relationship management at a leading European bank
  • Exposure to senior bankers and product specialists across multiple business lines
  • A steep learning curve and insight into how banking products and strategies are developed for financial institutions
  • A collaborative, international, and intellectually stimulating work environment

Rewards and benefits

This is a great opportunity to train with highly skilled people who are experts in their field. You’ll do a lot and learn a lot - not only about your specialist area and the bank, but also about yourself and whether this type of environment is right for you.

You’ll also benefit from:

  • Internship allowance of 700 EUR based on a 36 hours work week
  • Your own work laptop
  • Hybrid working to blend home working for focus and office working for collaboration and co-creation
  • Personal growth and challenging work with endless possibilities
  • An informal working environment with innovative colleagues

During the duration of your internship at ING, it is mandatory to be enrolled at a Dutch university (or EU-university for EU passport holders).
