And that's where you come in:\nWe're hiring a Manager, Engineering to lead one team (up to eight engineers) within the Assessment Group at Instructure. You'll own your team's day-to-day execution, help your engineers grow, and make sure your team's work connects to the bigger picture of what we're building.\nThis is a hands-on people leadership role. You won't write production code day to day, but you'll stay close enough to the codebase to guide technical decisions, review architecture, and unblock your team when things get hard.\nWhat you'll do\nLead a team of engineers, guiding their day-to-day work and removing blockers so they can deliver.\n\nRun regular, effective one-on-ones with your direct reports and give continuous, honest feedback.\n\nOwn delivery for your team. Keep work on track, adjust priorities fast, and protect your team's health while you do it.\n\nMentor your engineers against our engineering competency framework and build a plan so no one person is a single point of failure.\n\nHire for your team: define the role, build the interview panel, run debriefs, and make the call.\n\nReview RFCs and tech specs your team writes, and co-sign off on them.\n\nHold your team accountable to our engineering quality and process standards, including code review, incident response, and the tech radar.\n\nTrack your team's delivery and reliability metrics, and coach your engineers on what \"meeting\" and \"exceeding\" expectations looks like.\n\nPartner with product, design, and other engineering teams to plan work and connect it to Instructure's broader strategy.\n\nManage your team's spend and flag budget risks early.\n\nWhat we're looking for\nExperience managing software engineers, ideally with a background at the senior engineer level or above before moving into management.\n\nA track record of delegating rather than doing the work yourself, while staying technical enough to guide your team's decisions.\n\nComfort giving direct, caring feedback, including the hard conversations.\n\nExperience running a hiring process from job requisition to offer.\n\nStrong written and verbal communication.
