Our ultimate mission is to support one million SMEs in their defining moments, creating lasting impact for the communities and economies they drive.\nThe team\nThe Risk Squad owns credit risk and fraud for iwocaPay, iwoca's Buy Now Pay Later product for businesses. The aim is to lend to every business likely to repay, and to spot the ones that aren't.\nThe squad works across three areas:\nLending decisions. Building and improving the automated credit model.\n\nThe portfolio. Tracking losses, chargebacks, and seller performance, and deciding which segments to grow or pull back from.\n\nNew products. Designing the risk side of each one before it launches.\n\nThe squad is small and new - two data scientists, a risk analyst and a risk lead.\nThe role\nAs a Data Scientist in the Risk Squad, you'll co-own every credit model with the other data scientist and review one another's work. The job is mostly supervised ML on tabular data, with a fair amount of data engineering as the squad moves onto its own pipelines. You'll start on the automated credit model and take on the invoice financing models over time. You can also test ideas with iwoca's other lending data science teams, who work on similar credit problems.\nYou'll choose what to work on and write the plans you deliver. Much of the squad's work happens in iwocaPay's product and strategy meetings, so your models shape the roadmap. You'll also help set up how the squad works - what it monitors, and the guidelines it follows.\nLive project examples:\nModel architecture. Rethinking the model around how iwocaPay actually lends: overlapping facilities, short terms, and a growing set of products a customer can use.\n\nBlending datasets. Bringing more iwocaPay-specific data into the models while still drawing on iwoca's larger core lending dataset, through methods such as transfer learning.\n\nInvoice financing. Building a credit risk model from scratch for a new product on a segment iwoca hasn’t lent to before. Plus finding the modelling opportunities elsewhere in the funnel, like in our offers...\n\nThe requirements\nEssential:\nStatistical foundations. You have a background in probability and statistics from a quantitative field - typically a degree or Master's in Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or similar. You reason about uncertainty and calibration as first-order concerns.\n\nProduction ML. You have built supervised ML models on tabular data end to end - exploration, training, deployment, and monitoring.\n\nOwnership. You work well in a small, early-stage team where priorities move quickly. You build what you need as you go, and take loosely defined problems from framing to a landed decision.\n\nJudgement. You know when a model is good enough to go live, and when it needs more work. You critically evaluate model output - yours, a colleague's, or an LLM's - and can explain why a choice is right.\n\nAI leverage. You've used AI to produce work you couldn't have delivered without it - a modelling pipeline, a prototype, or a tool others use. You judge where it helps and where it doesn't.\n\nCommunication. You write and speak clearly, directly, and concisely. You adapt technical detail for non-technical colleagues in product, risk, and leadership.\n\nBonus:\nDomain experience. You have worked in credit risk modelling or lending.\n\nNon-linear methods. You have used gradient boosting or neural networks on tabular data in production.\n\nCombining datasets. You have used transfer learning, domain adaptation, or similar methods on data sources of different size and relevance.\n\nData engineering. You have built data pipelines and managed datasets alongside your modelling work.\n\nCoding. You can write code for analysis. The squad works in Python.\n\nThe salary\nWe expect to pay from £60,000 to £80,000 for this role. But, we’re open-minded, so definitely include your salary goals with your application.
