Develop Reliable Data Solutions and Support Better-Informed Decisions
We're recruiting an experienced Senior Database and Analytics Developer to support Isle of Wight Council with the development, maintenance, and improvement of database, reporting, and analytics solutions.
This technical role combines database development, data integration, performance optimisation, and business intelligence. You'll help turn complex data into reliable, accessible information, supporting service teams to understand performance and make informed decisions.
You'll work closely with technical colleagues, service managers, and other stakeholders to understand requirements, resolve data challenges, and deliver practical solutions that meet agreed business needs.
About the Role
As a Senior Database and Analytics Developer, you'll design, develop, and maintain database and analytics solutions, ensuring information is accurate, appropriately controlled, and available for reporting and operational use.
You'll take a structured approach to development, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation, balancing new requirements with improvements to existing systems. You'll also provide technical guidance and support effective knowledge sharing throughout the assignment.
What you'll be doing:
- Designing, developing, and maintaining database solutions, creating structures, queries, views, and procedures that meet agreed requirements.
- Developing data integration and transformation processes, bringing information together from different sources and preparing it for reporting and analysis.
- Building and improving reports, dashboards, and analytical datasets, helping users access clear, relevant, and reliable information.
- Investigating data quality issues, identifying inconsistencies, validating outputs, and working with data owners to resolve underlying problems.
- Monitoring and improving database and query performance, troubleshooting issues and recommending changes to improve reliability and efficiency.
- Working with stakeholders to gather and clarify requirements, translating business needs into technical specifications and practical solutions.
- Testing and documenting development work, following agreed change-control processes and maintaining clear records of data structures, transformations, and dependencies.
- Supporting secure and sustainable use of data, following approved access controls, providing technical guidance, and ensuring clear documentation and handover arrangements.
Requirements
We're looking for a technically capable, analytical, and organised developer with experience delivering database and reporting solutions in a complex organisation.
You'll be confident investigating technical problems, explaining findings clearly, and working with colleagues who have different levels of technical knowledge. Attention to detail, a collaborative approach, and the ability to manage competing priorities will be important.
You'll ideally have:
- Experience in database development, data engineering, analytics development, or a similar technical role.
- Strong SQL skills, including experience writing, testing, and optimising complex queries and database routines.
- Experience working with relational databases and data models, with an understanding of how design choices affect accuracy, usability, and performance.
- Experience developing data integration and transformation processes, including extracting, cleaning, validating, and loading information from multiple sources.
- Experience with reporting or business intelligence tools, producing useful reports, dashboards, or datasets for different audiences.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to identify the causes of data or performance issues and implement appropriate solutions.
- Experience following structured development practices, including testing, version control, technical documentation, and controlled deployment.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to explain technical information clearly and provide guidance to colleagues.
Experience working within a local authority or another public-sector organisation would be beneficial.
Applicants should have the right to work in the UK, be available for the stated assignment period, and be able to meet the Council's confirmed attendance requirements. Relevant references and any required pre-employment checks will need to be completed.
Why Apply
This is an opportunity to apply your database and analytics expertise within a Council environment, helping services access dependable information and improve the way they use data.
The role offers varied technical work across database development, data integration, reporting, and performance improvement. You'll have the opportunity to solve practical problems, collaborate with service teams, and deliver solutions that can continue to support the organisation beyond the assignment.
