Held (GHL), is a consulting firm specializing in Building Code Consulting, Fire Protection Engineering, and Life Safety services. We provide innovative solutions to address complex building code and fire and life safety challenges for projects across Western Canada. Our portfolio includes residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, healthcare, and mixed-use developments ranging from small renovations to large, complex facilities.\nWe are seeking an experienced and motivated Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) to help grow our presence in Alberta. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering building code and fire and life safety consulting services, managing projects, supporting clients, and mentoring junior staff.\nThe position will initially be hybrid or predominantly remote; however, candidates should expect a gradual transition to greater in-office presence as the team expands, reflecting JS Held’s commitment to the benefits of in-person collaboration, mentorship, and training. \nKey Responsibilities\nProvide building code, fire and life safety consulting services for a broad range of development projects, including Part 3 and Part 9 buildings under Division B of the applicable Building Code.\nDevelop practical code strategies that support project goals while maintaining compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations.\nReview design documents and liaise with project teams to identify risks, opportunities, and code-related considerations throughout design and construction.\nPrepare code analyses, approaches to code compliance, building code reports, alternative solutions, and other project deliverables.\nBuild strong working relationships with clients, architects, engineers, contractors, developers, and AHJs to support project success from concept through completion.\nManage multiple projects concurrently, including scope, schedules, budgets, deliverables, and client communication.\nParticipate in design workshops, AHJ meetings, site visits, field reviews, and construction-phase support activities.\nProvide mentorship and technical guidance to junior team members while supporting their professional growth.\nApply sound professional judgment and take ownership of technical recommendations and project deliverables.\nSupport business development and continued practice growth through client relationship management, proposal preparation, industry engagement, marketing and educational activities, and thought leadership.\n Required Qualifications:\nBachelor’s degree in Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a related discipline.\n5+ years of experience in building code consulting, fire protection engineering, architecture, building science, or a related field.\n Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with registration in Alberta through APEGA, or eligibility for immediate registration, plus registration or eligibility for registration with EGBC.\nStrong working knowledge of the National Building Code - Alberta Edition, particularly Part 3 and Part 9 requirements, and fire and life safety principles, including occupant safety, exiting, spatial separations, fire-resistance ratings, and fire protection systems.\nExperience conducting building code reviews, interpreting architectural and engineering drawings, and preparing technical reports, analyses, compliance documentation, alternative solutions, and performance-based code compliance strategies.\nExperience supporting projects through planning, design, permitting, construction, and occupancy, including site inspections and coordination with AHJs.\nExperience collaborating with developers, architects, engineers, contractors, and regulatory authorities, while managing multiple concurrent projects and client relationships.\nExcellent analytical, problem-solving, organizational, project management, written, and verbal communication skills, including technical report writing and client-facing presentations.\nProficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.\nPreferred Qualifications:\nExperience with a broad range of building types, including Part 3 and Part 9 buildings.\nExperience presenting technical code positions to municipalities and regulatory authorities.\nExperience with fire engineering analyses, performance-based design, and alternative solutions.\nCertified Professional (CP) experience or equivalent municipal approval experience.\nExisting relationships within the Alberta development, architectural, engineering, and regulatory communities.\nPhysical Qualifications:\nAbility to lift up to 50 pounds.\nAbility to travel to project sites and conduct field investigations.\nAbility to work indoors and outdoors in hot and cold environments.\nAbility to access and work at heights, including roofs, scaffolds, lifts, and other elevated surfaces, as well as enclosed spaces such as attics and crawlspaces, with appropriate personal protection.\nAbility to lift, transport, set up, and use an extension ladder to access roofs and other elevated surfaces.\nAbility to climb, stand, walk, kneel, and crouch for extended periods.\n Some of the Benefits We Have Include\nJ.S.
