How will you make an impact?

The Senior Principal Mechanical Integration Engineer will have a critical understanding of manufacturing processes for thermal components and solid comprehension of thermal design and analysis to lead and oversee the mechanical systems essential for Data Center Infrastructure functionality. This role will involve developing specifications, selecting key components, component placement, selecting fastening methods, and transitioning design to manufacturing. Additionally, the position includes leading test process implementation and equipment selection to maintain the highest standards of operational excellence and reliability.

Organization: Data Center Infrastructure Team

Location: Remote* OR Austin, TX

*Requires up to 30% domestic and/or international travel (rare)

What will you do?

  • Have a strong background in liquid cooling technology used in data center design and buildout.

  • Act as the subject matter expert on all matters related to single phase and two-phase liquid cooling applications within hyperscale data centers, including primary and in-rack cooling solutions.

  • Have expertise in both enclosed and facility-based cooling systems

  • Have experience with current Cooling Distribution Unit (CDU) technologies

  • Ability to detail operational expectations for LC Racks, Manifolds and other LC infrastructure (Pressure Ratings, Temperature Ranges (in/outlet), Flow Uniformity and Durability)

  • Proficiency with testing concepts for leaks/mitigation and hydrostatic pressure validation, flow resistance analysis, and corrosion assessments to comply with international standards such as ASME and ISO.

  • Knowledgeable on High-Density Liquid Cooling (HDLC) products utilized in global data center applications

  • In depth knowledge of rack manifold manufacturing, design and function (Machining and Welding, Surface Finishing, Material and Surface Treatments, Post-Production Cleaning, Flow Optimization, Thermal Expansion, Connection Interfaces, High-Point Vents and Low-Point Drains)

  • Review CAD/Technical Data Packages to determine and validate mechanical design requirements for components and their functions within a system environment

  • Responsible for understanding product specifications, plumbing, and hydronic systems to lead reviews with all disciplines ensuring the design and components meet performance and applicable code requirements

  • Ability to evaluate thermal data collected from engineering or manufacturing tests to confirm product conformance to thermo-mechanical requirements, testing and modeling

  • Knowledgeable in fabrication practices and installation of copper, stainless steel and aluminum piping for large-scale cooling systems

  • Understanding and conducting stress and flow analysis to ensure that the piping systems can withstand operational conditions without failure

  • Collaborate with project managers on design quotations

  • Provide technical input to identify and mitigate project risks that may impact project plans and schedules

  • Conduct component selection for pipes, fittings, and valves based on factors like fluid type, temperature, pressure, and corrosion resistance in chillers, HVAC systems and liquid cooling loops

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and ensure system compatibility and integration for liquid cooling systems at the rack, site, equipment, and system levels, including water chillers, heat exchangers, Air Handler Units, and more

  • Ability to prepare technical specifications for piping components and systems, including testing procedures, installation procedures and maintenance guidelines

  • Utilize CAD tools, CAE tools, and equipment for engineering tasks

  • Evaluate/optimize manufacturing assembly processes by designing, modifying, and testing manufacturing methods and equipment, conferring with equipment vendors, and soliciting observations from production team

  • Adept at creating detailed mechanical design of components, sub-assemblies, and system integration

  • Capable of creating a Bill of Materials (BOM) for release to manufacturing

  • Perform tests, debug, and validation of mechanical systems and support manufacturing processes

  • Manage relationships with mechanical component vendors and contract manufacturers

  • Keep updated with the latest technologies and methods to ensure competitive and cost-effective designs

  • Works with your manager to propose potential R&D project ideas to enhance competency areas

  • Discuss with management and production staff to assess engineering feasibility and cost-effectiveness

  • Apply modular data center design principles to liquid cooling integration - standardized, repeatable mechanical packages that can be built, tested, and validated in a factory environment prior to shipment.

  • Design cooling systems for prefabricated and skid-mounted deployment, accounting for transport and vibration loads, shipping envelope constraints, and inter-module connection interfaces.

How will you get here?

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field is required

Experience:

  • Minimum of 8+ years of experience in mechanical system integration

  • Proven track record of successful system designs and implementations in a relevant industry

  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, integration strategy, and system coordination

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail

  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities

  • Alternatively, a suitable combination of education, experience, and/or training may be considered

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Creative, self-motivated, accountable, and team-oriented

  • Able to work independently with minimal oversight

  • Ability to travel 20% to 30% as required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering or related engineering discipline.

  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.

  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations related to Data Center Infrastructure.

  • Hands-on experience designing liquid cooling systems for modular/prefabricated data center deployments, including factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site integration.

  • Familiarity with modular data center product architectures and the design constraints that come with factory build, transport, and field commissioning.

The pay range for this role is $164,200 - $295,600. Job-related, non-discriminatory factors used to determine the actual offered rate include qualifications and experience, geographic location, education, external market data, and consideration of internal equity.
