Developer / Systems Integrator (Aptum Platform)
A enerygy solutions company is looking for a skilled Developer and Systems Integrator to join their team im Strand,Western Cape. The Developer will be responsible to own and manage the backend operations of Aptum, our proprietary IoT and energy-monitoring platform. Aptum ingests telemetry from generators, power meters, refrigeration controllers, and PLCs for retail and food-service clients across South Africa.
This is a critical role for a developer who enjoys the "full stack" of device-to-API integration. You will be the primary technical owner for commissioning new sites, writing the data decoders that turn raw device payloads into meaningful measurements, and automating the platform administration that keeps our clients' operations running smoothly.
This is not a pure junior role. You will be entrusted with live customer systems, and your work directly impacts client billing and operational decisions. We are looking for someone who is meticulous with data, thrives on solving real-world integration puzzles, and is eager to take ownership of a workstream.
Key Responsibilities
Bench Commissioning & Go-Live:Build, configure, and test edge gateways (Modbus polls, MQTT topics) at our Strand office. Direct field technicians remotely to complete site go-lives.
Data Conversion & Decoding:Write JavaScript to decode raw device payloads, applying datasheet specifications. Handle signed values, 32-bit registers, scaling factors, and unit conversions with accuracy.
Platform Automation:Write Python scripts against the Aptum REST API for bulk operations, health checks, data back-fills, and to automate repetitive administrative tasks.
Reporting & Dashboards:Build and maintain client dashboards, scheduled reports, and data exports (CSV, emails).
Standards & Documentation:Enforce a single measurement-naming standard across all clients and document all changes at the point of delivery (register maps, converters, procedures).
Deployment & Server Support:Support Linux servers, manage nginx, TLS certificates, and diagnose service issues from application logs.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications:No formal qualification is required. A relevant diploma, degree, or bootcamp is welcome, but a portfolio demonstrating capability carries equal weight.
License:A valid driver's licence is essential.
Right to Work:Must be legally entitled to work in South Africa.
Essential Technical & Personal Skills:
Python:Proficient in writing Python 3 unaided for API interaction, JSON/CSV handling, and error management.
JavaScript:Sufficient to write and debug payload decoders (bitwise operations, data type handling).
Systems:Comfortable with Linux administration over SSH, and daily use of Git and GitHub.
Data Integrity:A disciplined, systematic approach to handling live production data. Must back up, check, and ask for clarification early when unsure.
Communication:Clear and effective written English.
Technical Competencies
Programming & Scripting:Experience writing Python scripts against REST APIs (handling auth, pagination, retries, and unexpected responses). Ability to read and extend existing JavaScript code.
Data & Integration:Deep understanding of how raw device readings are stored (byte order, signed/unsigned values, scaling, and timestamping). Ability to verify data end-to-end against real telemetry.
Systems & Tooling:Proficient with the Linux command line (file handling, permissions, services, logs), Git branches/PRs, and basic web service operation (nginx, TLS).
Advantageous Skills
Modbus, MQTT, or other industrial protocols.
SQL / PostgreSQL.
Django framework.
Angular, TypeScript, or Java.
Node-RED or PLC programming.
nginx, systemd, cron, VPNs.
An electrical, energy, electronics, or embedded tinkering background.
