This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Junior Ubuntu Software Engineer based in India.

This is an opportunity for an early-career engineer to build a strong foundation while contributing to one of the world’s most widely used open source operating systems.

You will work across software development, packaging, integration, testing, automation, and Linux distribution engineering.

Depending on your skills and interview process, you may join a team focused on foundational systems, server technologies, desktop experiences, or software archive maintenance.

You will work with technologies including Rust, Go, Python, C/C++, and Flutter while learning from experienced engineers in a highly distributed environment.

The role combines hands-on engineering with opportunities to contribute to upstream open source projects and improve technical and community documentation.

You will help develop reliable, performant, and resilient software used by millions of people across cloud, AI, IoT, enterprise, and developer environments.

With a strong emphasis on continuous learning, technical excellence, and collaboration, this role provides an excellent path for graduates and early-career engineers passionate about open source.

Accountabilities:

    • Design, develop, test, and ship software across foundational systems, server, desktop, cloud, and other areas of the Ubuntu engineering ecosystem.
    • Build software using technologies such as Rust, Go, Python, C/C++, and Flutter, depending on the team and project requirements.
    • Package, integrate, test, maintain, and publish open source software within Linux distribution repositories.
    • Debug complex software and system issues, identify root causes, and implement robust and maintainable solutions.
    • Contribute to the architecture and integration of open source technologies across environments ranging from boot firmware and system software to cloud application deployment.
    • Build and maintain automation, testing, and delivery processes that support the reliable development and release of software.
    • Contribute to the maintenance, evolution, and overall quality of a large-scale Linux distribution and its software repositories.
    • Author and improve technical documentation and community-facing documentation to make software and development processes easier to understand and use.
    • Contribute to upstream and neighboring open source projects while engaging constructively with the wider open source community.
    • Collaborate effectively with engineers and stakeholders across a globally distributed organization.
    • Continuously develop technical and professional skills while adopting new technologies, methodologies, and engineering practices.
    • Requirements:

      • An exceptional academic track record in high school and university, or a compelling alternative path demonstrating strong ability and achievement.
      • An undergraduate degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a related discipline, or equivalent evidence of technical capability.
      • Early-career or graduate-level software engineering experience with a strong motivation to build a career in open source.
      • Experience with at least one relevant programming language or technology, such as Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, C, or C++.
      • A genuine passion for open source software and an interest in contributing to software communities and projects.
      • Strong problem-solving abilities and the drive to go beyond expectations when tackling technical challenges.
      • Professional written and spoken English, with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
      • Ability to work effectively in a globally distributed team and collaborate across different cultures and time zones.
      • Familiarity with Linux distributions is an advantage.
      • Familiarity with system debugging tools and techniques is an advantage.
      • Experience with automation tools and CI/CD systems is an advantage.
      • Previous contributions to open source projects are an advantage.
      • Willingness and ability to travel internationally approximately twice per year for team events lasting up to two weeks.
      • Benefits:

        • Competitive compensation based on geographical location, experience, and performance.
        • Performance-driven annual bonus.
        • Distributed work environment with twice-yearly in-person team sprints.
        • Personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year.
        • Annual compensation reviews, with additional reviews possible for graduates and associates.
        • Recognition rewards for outstanding contributions and performance.
        • Annual holiday leave.
        • Maternity and paternity leave.
        • Team Member Assistance Program and Wellness Platform.
        • Opportunities to travel internationally and meet colleagues in different locations.
        • Priority Pass access and travel upgrades for long-haul company events.
        • Opportunity to build a career around widely used open source technologies while developing skills across software engineering, Linux, cloud, automation, and systems development.
