This senior project leadership role is responsible for advancing complex, high-priority initiatives across a growing nonprofit education and workforce development organization.
You will manage a strategic portfolio of projects, balancing priorities, resources, risks, dependencies, and organizational objectives.
The role combines hands-on project management with program-level advisory responsibilities and regular engagement with senior leadership.
You will bring structure to complex and ambiguous initiatives while strengthening project management standards, governance, tools, and reporting practices.
A key part of the position is mentoring project managers and helping teams adopt more consistent and effective delivery practices.
You will collaborate across departments and locations, influence stakeholders without direct authority, and provide data-driven recommendations on critical decisions and trade-offs.
This is a hybrid role with remote flexibility, a Monday-to-Friday schedule, and approximately 10-20% travel.
Accountabilities:
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the Leadership Team by evaluating, prioritizing, and advancing strategic projects in alignment with organizational objectives, available resources, and cross-functional needs.
- Lead complex, high-priority organizational initiatives, programs, and projects, applying advanced project management expertise to drive successful outcomes.
- Oversee the strategic project portfolio, including interdependencies, priorities, risks, resource requirements, and cross-departmental impacts.
- Provide portfolio-level reporting to senior leadership, presenting data-driven recommendations, risks, trade-offs, decisions required, and overall project health.
- Lead cross-functional projects using established project management lifecycle practices, particularly initiatives involving significant complexity, ambiguity, or organizational impact.
- Drive standardization, continuous improvement, and adoption of project management methodologies, tools, templates, governance practices, and reporting standards.
- Mentor and coach associate and mid-level project managers on planning, stakeholder communication, risk management, project documentation, and delivery best practices.
- Provide administrative and project support for priority digital tools, helping teams improve system adoption, workflow efficiency, reporting, and collaboration.
- Create, maintain, and continuously improve project charters, plans, schedules, risk and issue logs, decision registers, business requirements documents, close-out materials, action trackers, and executive dashboards.
- Organize and facilitate project meetings by developing agendas, documenting minutes and decisions, tracking action items, and maintaining accountability.
- Develop and maintain executive dashboards while proactively identifying, escalating, and resolving project risks and issues with appropriate leadership involvement.
- Develop presentations and facilitate knowledge-sharing sessions, workshops, lunch-and-learns, steering committees, leadership briefings, and other organizational meetings.
- Review existing business processes, identify opportunities for improvement, and develop strategies that increase project delivery effectiveness and organizational efficiency.
- Negotiate priorities, resources, timelines, dependencies, and trade-offs across departments while maintaining alignment with broader organizational goals.
- Participate as a member of the Leadership Team in developing and implementing cross-functional initiatives that contribute to overall organizational success.
- Bachelor’s degree required; an advanced degree is preferred.
- At least 7 years of progressively responsible project management experience, including complex cross-functional projects or programs.
- PMP certification is strongly preferred, while program management, Agile, or related professional credentials are valuable.
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple concurrent projects, interdependent workstreams, and teams across multiple locations.
- Strong intellectual curiosity and analytical ability, with the capacity to evaluate ideas, proposals, risks, project options, and competing priorities.
- Comfortable operating in ambiguity, structuring unclear problems into actionable plans, and balancing decisive action with appropriate risk management.
- Demonstrated ability to lead problem solving with limited oversight in rapidly changing environments.
- Strong ability to influence senior stakeholders, coordinate large cross-functional teams, and achieve results without direct authority.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy, including the ability to identify discrepancies, resolve issues, improve processes, and meet demanding deadlines.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask, prioritize competing demands, and make sound recommendations regarding organizational trade-offs.
- Ability to analyze data, trends, and project performance indicators and translate findings into clear, actionable recommendations for leadership.
- Excellent written, verbal, presentation, public speaking, and executive communication skills, with the ability to communicate persuasively to diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, guide, and provide constructive feedback to project managers, project leads, and cross-functional team members.
- Experience leading highly visible programs or portfolios with interdependent workstreams and senior stakeholder engagement is preferred.
- Experience with labor-management partnerships, workforce development, higher education, career and technical education, vocational education, certification, or credentialing within the healthcare labor market is advantageous.
- Experience with Salesforce, Wrike, Zoom, and Microsoft Office is preferred.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license, have access to a vehicle, and maintain appropriate automobile insurance.
