This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Rust Systems Engineer - Embedded Proxy & Appliance based in India.
This is a senior systems engineering opportunity focused on building and owning embedded proxy software deployed across a large fleet of school-network appliances.
You’ll work close to the hardware and operating system, developing production-grade Rust for constrained environments and network-intensive workloads.
The role spans embedded Linux, networking, performance optimization, containerization, and cloud-based fleet management.
You’ll help evolve critical infrastructure that must remain reliable, secure, and performant across thousands of real-world deployments.
The position offers significant technical ownership, from low-level OS and networking components through the AWS control plane.
You’ll collaborate with engineers across product and infrastructure disciplines in a distributed, international environment.
This is an excellent fit for an engineer who enjoys solving complex systems problems where reliability and performance matter at scale.
Accountabilities
- Own the design, development, and maintenance of embedded proxy software running on hardware appliances deployed across distributed customer environments.
- Develop production systems software in Rust, working close to the operating system, network stack, and constrained hardware.
- Implement and optimize networking functionality, including TCP stream handling, socket programming, transparent proxying, and related low-level components.
- Work with embedded Linux at the OS and driver level, including device drivers, kernel modules, cross-compilation, and hardware bring-up where required.
- Build and maintain containerized workloads suitable for constrained appliance environments.
- Conduct performance testing, load testing, memory and CPU profiling, and flame graph analysis to identify and resolve bottlenecks.
- Contribute to cloud-connected infrastructure and fleet management capabilities using AWS and Infrastructure as Code principles.
- Collaborate with engineering and product stakeholders to define architecture, troubleshoot complex technical issues, and deliver reliable solutions.
- Apply engineering best practices around code quality, observability, reliability, security, and maintainability.
- 6+ years of overall software engineering experience, including at least 3 years of hands-on production Rust development in a systems or embedded environment rather than web or application development.
- Strong experience with embedded Linux, including areas such as device drivers, kernel modules, cross-compilation, or hardware bring-up.
- Solid systems and network programming experience, particularly TCP streams, socket programming, transparent proxies, or comparable low-level networking technologies.
- Practical experience with Docker or containerization for constrained, embedded, or appliance-based deployments.
- Demonstrated ability to profile and optimize systems using load testing, memory/CPU profiling, and flame graph analysis.
- Working knowledge of AWS and Infrastructure as Code concepts, with hands-on exposure to technologies such as Terraform or CloudFormation considered valuable.
- Experience with a production fleet, IoT platform, embedded device, or hardware appliance is strongly preferred.
- Additional experience with C, C++, or Go, as well as eBPF, netfilter, HAProxy, or Envoy, is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with RADIUS and observability technologies such as CloudWatch, Splunk, or SLO-based monitoring is a plus.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate issues across hardware, operating systems, networking, and cloud infrastructure.
- Ability to take ownership of complex technical problems and work effectively in a distributed engineering environment.
- Remote work opportunity based in India.
- Direct-hire, full-time position with the opportunity to work on core embedded and networking infrastructure.
- Significant technical ownership across Rust, embedded Linux, networking, hardware appliances, and AWS.
- Opportunity to build software deployed at scale across thousands of real-world environments.
- Exposure to challenging systems engineering problems involving performance, reliability, networking, and constrained computing.
- Collaboration with distributed engineering and product teams across India, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
- Inclusive, equal-opportunity work environment with consideration for qualified candidates regardless of legally protected characteristics.
- Opportunity to contribute to technology supporting safer and more effective digital environments for K-12 education.
