Sr. Legal Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Sr. Legal Engineer based in United States.

This is a senior hands-on role focused on designing the next generation of AI-enabled legal services and workflows.

You will work at the intersection of legal practice, generative AI, workflow design, data, and service delivery.

The role combines deep understanding of legal processes with practical experience building solutions using enterprise AI platforms and legal technology.

You will collaborate with lawyers, legal operations professionals, technologists, product teams, and subject-matter experts to transform complex legal tasks into scalable AI-enabled workflows.

Your work will span areas such as eDiscovery, investigations, legal operations, managed services, and other high-volume legal processes.

You will rapidly prototype, test, validate, and operationalize AI solutions while ensuring appropriate human oversight, quality, reliability, and defensibility.

For the right candidate, the position may evolve into broader leadership responsibility for an AI Solutions & Workflow function as the program matures.

Accountabilities

• Design AI-enabled legal workflows that combine generative AI, legal data, technology platforms, process design, and human expertise to improve legal outcomes and operational efficiency.
• Act as a hands-on legal engineer by developing sophisticated prompts, agent instructions, workflow architectures, prototypes, and multi-step agentic processes using Claude, Harvey, and comparable enterprise AI platforms.
• Work directly with lawyers, litigation teams, legal operations professionals, and subject-matter experts to understand legal tasks and translate them into structured, repeatable, AI-enabled workflows.
• Design workflows that appropriately combine artificial intelligence with human review and validation, incorporating checkpoints, escalation criteria, quality controls, and human-in-the-loop safeguards.
• Develop solutions using proprietary AI capabilities, client-approved enterprise AI platforms, review technologies, Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), Model Context Protocol (MCP) connectors, and other legal technology.
• Rapidly prototype new approaches, test them against real legal use cases, and determine whether successful solutions should become repeatable services, product capabilities, connected solutions, or further innovation initiatives.
• Partner with Product and Technology teams to translate workflow requirements into scalable product capabilities, integrations, and technical solutions.
• Collaborate with AI-focused legal services, Lawyers on Demand, and delivery teams to turn successful designs into scalable managed services and AI-enabled operating models.
• Establish reusable workflow patterns, agent architectures, prompt libraries, evaluation methods, and implementation playbooks that can be applied consistently across clients and matters.
• Develop testing and validation frameworks to assess output quality, reliability, defensibility, and appropriate levels of human oversight before AI workflows are scaled.
• Support selected client engagements, workshops, and solution-design sessions where advanced AI workflow expertise is required.
• Evaluate emerging AI models, platforms, and agentic technologies based on their practical applicability to legal work, prioritizing measurable value over technology novelty.
• Educate internal teams on effective generative AI adoption and help demonstrate how emerging capabilities can be applied to real-world legal workflows.
• Contribute to strategic decisions regarding when an AI capability should be built internally, connected to existing technologies, developed through partnerships, operationalized as a service, or incubated as an innovation initiative.
• Help establish a portfolio of validated AI-enabled workflow patterns and sophisticated agentic solutions around priority legal use cases.
• Translate successful prototypes into scalable services and product requirements while increasing effective use of both proprietary and third-party AI technologies.
• Drive measurable improvements in speed, capacity, cost, quality, and overall legal-team effectiveness while reducing reliance on one-off expert intervention.

Requirements

• Bring significant experience within legal services, a law firm, corporate legal department, legal technology company, Alternative Legal Service Provider (ALSP), or legal innovation function.
• Demonstrate a strong understanding of legal workflows, ideally including litigation, investigations, eDiscovery, legal operations, contract workflows, or other high-volume legal processes.
• Have hands-on experience with Claude, Harvey, or comparable enterprise generative AI platforms and a demonstrated ability to apply them to practical legal use cases.
• Demonstrate experience designing sophisticated prompts, reusable workflows, AI assistants, agents, or multi-step generative AI processes.
• Understand agentic AI concepts including tool use, workflow decomposition, retrieval, context management, structured outputs, human-in-the-loop controls, and multi-step reasoning.
• Be able to determine when a task is best addressed through generative AI versus traditional search, analytics, deterministic automation, or human legal judgment.
• Have familiarity with APIs, MCP, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), enterprise data connections, or similar integration concepts; deep software engineering expertise is not required.
• Be comfortable independently prototyping solutions and collaborating effectively with engineers when production development is required.
• Possess strong analytical and process-design skills, with the ability to break complex legal work into discrete tasks, decision points, and repeatable workflows.
• Communicate clearly and credibly with lawyers, technologists, business leaders, and clients, adapting effectively to both technical and legal audiences.
• Demonstrate a practical, outcome-oriented mindset focused on adoption, scalability, measurable impact, and sustainable implementation rather than experimentation for its own sake.
• Candidates may come from varied backgrounds, including practicing or former attorneys who have developed strong AI-building capabilities, legal innovation or knowledge-management professionals, legal technologists, legal operations professionals, eDiscovery practitioners with advanced generative AI expertise, or technically oriented consultants with deep knowledge of legal workflows.
• Demonstrate the ability to operate comfortably between strategic legal discussions and hands-on technical sessions involving prompts, tools, data sources, workflow design, and agent steps.
• Be capable of helping move an organization from individual AI tools and isolated use cases toward repeatable AI-enabled legal workflows that can be delivered consistently across clients and business lines.
• Be prepared to take on broader leadership responsibility for an AI Solutions & Workflow function as the program develops, where appropriate to your experience and capabilities.
